POSITION ON INTEGRATED EMPLOYMENT
OVERVIEW: Your table is composed of SRC Members charged with the
following scenario:
INTEGRATED EMPLOYMENT: The Council has been asked to take an
official position on integrated employment. As the “customer voice”, which
is more important: commensurate wages or integrated work settings?
Each person at the table will be given this handout with a mandated SRC
category, including a role to portray during the discussion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A Chairperson will be designated. He or she will be known to the group.
His/her role will be to facilitate discussion about the topic and work with the
group to reach concensus for making decisions and taking action.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7 others at the table will portray different mandated SRC categories and
roles (see details below):
INTRODUCE YOURSELF with your mandated category (VR Customer,
SILC, 121 Project, Special Education, Community Rehabilitation
Organization, CAP, or Business, Industry or Labor).
YOUR ROLE relates to the stance you will take during discussion with your
group as you work to reach a decision.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your role is: CHAIRPERSON
You… are charged with facilitating discussion with your SRC members
about the topic above. You need to keep them on track so the conversation
continues moving forward. Your goal is to work with the group to reach
concensus for making decisions and taking action.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your role is: VR Customer rep
You… had excellent assistance from VR
to help you find a really good job. You are insistent that the SRC should reach
out to customers for more input (focus groups, etc.) about how to improve the VR
system. Your interpreter is stuck in a blizzard 30 miles away, so due to your
disability (hearing impairment), you have to write down your thoughts to share
with the group, while not being able to follow their muffled conversations.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your role is: Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) rep
You… have a big voice at the table - because of your disability, you interrupt
others and generally try to dominate the conversation. As a 5th year
Council member, you continue to strongly advocate that Centers for
Independent Living should be more involved with the SRC and its functions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your role is: 121 Project rep
You… are at your very first SRC meeting - ever. You are new to your 121
Project job (as of last Monday), and you are trying to determine not only the
role of the SRC with VR but how you can bring your talents and experiences
to the table. You want to ask questions but you’re not sure what to ask.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your role is: Special Education rep
You are THE NOTE TAKER.
You… are a person with low vision and a staunch advocate for the role of
Transition in VR. From your perspective, Transition tends to get lost in the
shuffle; you ask a lot of questions about how the SRC’s decisions will affect
Transition youth.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your role is: Community Rehabilitation Organization (CRO) rep
You… are the CEO of a local CRO. You are participating in the meeting via
teleconference. The phone connection is choppy, there is static on both
ends of the line, and you continue to have difficulty hearing the conversation
as well as being heard by your peers. You are VERY frustrated.

You… are the CAP Director and can quote chapter and verse about the
Rehab Act, Policy, etc. You are a ‘middle of the road’ kind of person - you
want people to like you, so you agree, to some extent, to ALL opinions that
are expressed by your peers… but you do not have an opinion of your own.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your role is: Business, Industry or Labor rep
You… are a “yeah, but…” person, rarely ever agreeing with anyone on
anything. Due to your disability, you have difficulty staying focused on the
task at hand. You tap your fingers, hum on occasion, and put your head
down on the table to rest for brief periods… without explanation.
