Don’t underestimate the importance of 10 & 15 point assignments. They add up!
Extra credit option found in assignment section. We will discuss options in class.
You will want to set aside time to read each assigned chapter including the Dialogue for
Analysis, the Summary of Concepts and Skills, and Vocabulary Quiz at the end of each chapter.
(You do not have to complete or turn in the vocabulary quiz.) If you do not have time to read
the chapter, at least scan the entire chapter. There are some short thinking/writing
assignments due as noted in the syllabus. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you complete those
short writings BEFORE class. If however, you have not read a chapter or completed an
assignment, DO come to class anyway. You will be able to participate in the discussion with
your partner-your examples will be impromptu instead of thought out ahead of time.

IV. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
  Check your syllabus every Monday and Wednesday to be sure that you
are prepared for class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 

college. I encourage you to make a commitment to this class. This class will be a valuable
experience for you and you will learn skills that you will use for the rest of your life in social

childcare, personal, or medical issues may arise over the course of the semester. I also realize
that some students have some communication apprehension. That is normal. I assure you that
I can help you overcome your communication concerns and fears. Also, even if unexpected
emergency circumstances arise that create attendance problems, I can assist you in finishing this
class if you are willing to make the effort.
If you have more than three absences, I reserve the right to drop you from class. If you are
absent and you think it is important for me to know why, write me a note that includes your
name, class time, and the date and reason that you were absent. It is not necessary for you
to call me when you are going to be absent. I do not document those calls. Put it in
4
writing if you think that I need to know why you were absent. You are responsible for
officially dropping the class if you decide to quit attending
Always to talk to your instructor before dropping any class. New Texas State and
College mandates are now being applied as of Fall 2007: (1) New (Fall 2007) students can
have a limited number of course WITHDRAWALS over the entire period of their

same course for a third time will be triple the regular cost. Financial aid cannot be
applied to registration in the same course for a third time.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is optional. So is success. Participation in this class is
necessary in order to succeed. You cannot participate if you do not attend. Participation is
not optional if you choose to succeed. Therefore, you cannot succeed in this class if you do
not attend. So, in reality, attendance is not optional. I take attendance at the beginning of
class. Your attendance is important because your opinions, perspectives, and input are important.
You have valuable insights to share with other students. YOUR participation is what “makes”
this class. Please be on time to class as a courtesy to other students. Also, completed
assignments are documented and credited at the beginning of class. You may not receive
those points if you are late.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS/QUIZZES: Assignments turned in late will be subject to a penalty of
one letter grade and are due on or before next class meeting. Assignments turned in later
than that will receive up to ½ credit. Some points are always better than NO points!
You will receive only up to 75% of the maximum points available on quizzes taken late in the
testing center unless documentation of an emergency for missing class is provided.
ASSIGNMENT FORMAT: Please include your name, name of assignment, name of class, meeting
day/time, and date you turned the assignment in on every assignment/quiz. Include a cover
sheet on each assignment. Type all assignments except for the 10 point daily assignments,

V. CALENDAR
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Your success is very important to me. Don't hesitate to ask me,
come see me, or call me anytime you have a question!
This is a tentative calendar. I will follow it as closely as possible. It is subject to revision
based on student progress during the semester. It includes an overview of all assignments and
due dates for each assignment. Any changes made to the syllabus will be made in your best
interest. Please read the chapter or reading material to be discussed each day and
prepare short written assignments, as indicated on the calendar, before coming to class.
The topic of discussion for each class meeting is noted below. Bring your book to class every
day.
EVERY day, look for examples of the concepts that we discuss in class. Use the skills that you
learn on a daily basis. Teach your friends and family the concepts we discuss. This will help
you remember them. Watch the news, newspaper, and magazines for the concepts we discuss.
Bring articles to class to share. You will also begin to observe textbook concepts and
communication skills in novels, movies and TV shows.
All assignments will be turned in at the beginning of class. You will receive credit for the short
daily preparation assignments before we begin class each day. You will receive one 10 POINT
CREDIT PASS which will allow you credit for that assignment if you do not have it as long as
you are in class for the discussion.
The best way to predict the future is to help create it.

for each chapter. If you are absent when a test is given in class, your test will be available in
the testing center within the next week and it will be an essay exam. You will need to take the
exam within one week of the date it is placed in the testing center. You will receive only up to
75% of the maximum points available on tests taken in the testing center unless documentation
of an emergency for missing class is provided. An ID is required for admittance to the testing
center. Check their hours if you plan to use their services. There are some time restrictions.
COMMUNICATION GOALS: I will provide a format for your use in the development of your
two communication goals.
This assignment will be graded using the following criteria:
1. Do you have two goals and are they communication-related goals? As explained in class,
weight loss could be related to communication if it is a self-esteem concern. The related
communication issues and objectives would need to be addressed as part of the weight loss
plan. My interest would NOT be how you would plan to lose weight, but how you would address
the related communication objectives/issues.
2. Are concrete, achievable, measurable goals identified?
3. Are logical, sequential, reasonable, steps/behaviors/actions identified?
Are obstacles identified and addressed?
4. Are reasonable, clear timelines identified?
5. Are all sections of the format completed?
12
ANALYSIS OF OBSERVATIONS OF 3 COMMUNICATION CONCEPTS: 3 @ 50 pts each
The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your understanding of 3
communication concepts as evidenced by your observation and analysis of them in daily
interactions/observations. Entries need to include your description and analysis of 3
observations of communication concepts that we have discussed or that you have read about in
the textbook. Most observations/interactions will include more than one concept. One of the
observations will be presented conversationally to a couple of other students who will ask you
questions to clarify and draw out any concepts that you might not have included. The other
two will be submitted in writing only-unless we have time to discuss additional observations in
class. The easiest observations are ones that include misunderstanding, conflict,
negativism, anger, intimidation, etc. It is also much easier to analyze a situation in which you
are involved. You can include an observation of others if you are close enough to the situation
to understand the underlying issues. The situation must be a recent one- within the last
year.
All 3 observations, will need to include a written response to the following prompts. Remember
that you can find my syllabus online so you don’t have to retype all of the prompts. The
numbered prompts must be included on your paper.
ANALYSIS OF OBSERVATIONS OF 3 COMMUNICATION CONCEPTS
(Include only bolded text on your paper with your answers.)
1. Identify the concepts/skills or strategy observed. ( 5 points)
There are usually several concepts evident in any observation.
2. Define each concept in your own words. Textbook page numbers (5 points)
Include the page numbers in your book where the concept definitions/discussion is found.
3. Concisely and concretely describe the communication interaction.
Summary, content/relational aspects, conversation, nonverbals ( 10 points)
 Include enough detail for me to gain a clear understanding of how the identified
concepts were demonstrated.
 Include the content and relational aspects of the relationship/interaction. (VERY
IMPORTANT)
 Include as much conversation as necessary.
 Describe nonverbal cues observed.
4. Analyze the strengths and/or weaknesses of the interaction (30 points)
 What were the causes of the misunderstanding, hurt feelings, conflict, or
situation?
 How might the individuals have been more successful or satisfied with their
communications? Who did what that was inappropriate or misunderstood?
 What motivated each person’s behavior? Why did they act/respond the way they
did?
13





Were gender or personality factors in the communication or misunderstanding?
How did they/have they repaired or corrected the situation or relationship?
How could they repair, mend, correct the situation or relationship?
What are the cost/benefits of the above actions?
What else is important in this scenario?
Before turning in your paper ask yourself, “Does the paper include an ANALYSIS of the
communication interaction and not only a DESCRIPTION of the interaction?”
You will find many of the following concepts, and more, in your observations/analyses:
racism/sexism/ageism/heterosexism
content/relational messages
irreversible communication

grammatical errors. Remember, papers that include excessive spelling, mechanical, and/or
grammatical errors will be returned ungraded for revisions and resubmission. I will add 5
bonus points to each paper that is reviewed by Writing Center staff before submission. Just
ask a staff member to sign/stamp/ date your paper. I need the copy of the original
(edited) paper turned in with your revised paper.

portfolio, photo, montage-composition that reflects your self-concept, values, attitudes,
beliefs, personality, needs, strengths, goals. This “model” will reflect and emphasize the
communication skills and concepts learned this semester and your goals. Use your imagination
and creativity to create an artifact that you will be proud to display. You can use multiple
mediums: clay, oil/watercolors, pen/ink, calligraphy, Legos, building blocks, cartooning, develop
a DVD, develop an audio tape using music and personal messages, string, yarn, photographs,
newspapers and magazines, Powerpoint (printed to turn in), glitter, markers, origami, toys,
