Purpose
The National Diploma in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (Level 6) is a qualification
designed for people pursuing a vocation that requires significant expertise in adult literacy
and numeracy, such as: tutors or lecturers of foundation courses; community and
workplace literacy and numeracy tutors; staff involved in professional development for
adult literacy and numeracy tutors; personnel involved in resource development for adult
literacy and numeracy learners; and those involved in the academic leadership
management of adult literacy and numeracy education for their organisation.
People awarded this qualification have shown specialised academic and technical
competence in the areas of adult literacy and numeracy. They have demonstrated
expertise in: meeting the needs of diverse learners, embedding adult literacy and
numeracy in training or educational programmes, and formative assessment. They have
knowledge of national and international influences on adult literacy and numeracy in
Aotearoa New Zealand, and Te Ao Māori perspectives and influences; and have
developed a personal approach to strengthen adult literacy and numeracy in Aotearoa
New Zealand.
This professional qualification recognises that holders will be demonstrating their
competence in a range of personal, professional, and employment situations and contexts,
including non-teaching contexts such as professional development, resource development,
academic leadership, and educational management.
There are no prerequisites to entry to this qualification. However, candidates are expected
to have more than a basic underpinning knowledge of adult literacy and numeracy
education and theories. This includes knowledge of cultural perspectives of teaching and
learning with Māori adult literacy and numeracy learners, and adult literacy and numeracy
learners from other cultures. Candidates are also likely to have an education qualification
which reflects this level of expertise.
The National Diploma in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education is a stand alone
qualification or may lead on from the National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy
Education (Educator) (Level 5) [Ref:1212] or the National Certificate in Adult Literacy and
Numeracy (Vocational/Workplace) (Level 5) [Ref: 1253].
Special Notes
People may be granted recognition of current competence (RCC) on application to an
organisation that has been granted consent to assess against standards that meet the
requirements of the qualification. Candidates for RCC must go through an assessment
process carried out by registered assessors in accordance with NZQA guidelines.
