: To compare and contrast the services, mission, philosophy and goals of academic and public libraries you have visited in person.
A chart, created using Excel or the table feature of
Word, and a 1-2 page typed paper, double-spaced. Use 12 point Times New
Roman font (or similar) and standard margins. Please staple pages in the upper left corner; do not place in folders, covers or other presentation devises.
1.
Refer to pages 89-90 of your text for a list of questions you should consider when visiting a library. Also read the study questions for public and academic libraries on pages 90-92.
2.
Visit a public library in person. We will visit the Pasadena Public
Library as a group. Use another library, where you do not work, for this paper.
3.
Visit an academic library in person. Do not use PCC as your resource or a library where you work. Any CalState or UC library will welcome you; you are not asked for identification when visiting. Warning:
Caltech does not welcome outside visitors. Call ahead if in doubt.
4.
Create a chart: a.
Include at least three top row headings: one each for the names of the two libraries you visited and a comment column. You can add other headings if you wish.
b.
Include at least 10 items to compare and contrast in the far left column. Use the questions on pages 89-92 to develop these items. c.
Using the information from the libraries you visited, create your chart. Be flexible. You might add and delete rows as you explore.
5.
Write a reflection paper. Do not repeat the information in the chart. a.
Comment on your observations. Think about what you saw. What can you conclude? b.
Did you notice some major issues/concerns/trends?
c.
Do you think you would enjoy working in either environment?
Why or why not?

Work with other students. While each of you must submit a unique chart and paper, you can discuss the topics and content together.
