Hwa Chong Institution (High School Section) Humanities Department Geography, Tectonics: Worksheet 3 Name: ____________________ ( ) Date: ________ Class : Sec 3 __ Transform Plate Boundaries (p92) 1. Describe the difference between divergent and transform plate boundaries. At divergent plate boundaries, plates move away from each other at transform plate boundaries, the plates slide past each other. 2. Read the article on Fig 2.22 (p 93) and study Fig 2.20. Explain why Istanbul is prone to earthquakes. Istanbul is in danger because of its proximity to the North Anatolian Fault. The fault is on a transform plate boundary between the Anatolian Plate and Eurasian Plate. As the Anatolian Plate and Eurasian Plate slide past each other, tremendous stress builds up along the plate boundary. A sudden movement of the plates releases this pressure and the shockwaves cause earthquakes. Moreover, earthquakes since the 1990s have been occurring further west along the North Anatolian Fault towards Istanbul 3. Refer to Fig 2.25 (p 95) to answer this question. a) Identify the type of plate boundary at the San Andreas Fault. Transform plate booundary b) With the aid of an annotated sketch and an example, describe how earthquakes occur at transform plate boundaries. The Pacific Plate and the North American Plate are moving past each other along the San Andreas Fault. As the plates move past each other, stress builds up from the movement. Eventually the stress is released and this causes earthquakes. Eg 1906 earthquake in San Francisco Plate Boundaries:Summary Complete the table below. Refer to p 84 – 93. Type of Plate boundary Divergent Associated landforms Oceanic ridges, oceanic- oceanic volcano Divergent Rift valley, volcanoes continental - continental Example Mid-Atlantic Ridge The Great Rift Valley of East Africa, Cascade Range volcanoes Convergent Oceanic trenches, Mariana Trench, oceanic- oceanic volcanoes, Mount Etna, island arc Mariana Islands Convergent Oceanic trenches, Sunda Trench, oceanic - continental mountain ranges, Barisan Mountains volcano Convergent Mountain ranges (fold mountain) Himalayas Fault line (earthquakes) North Anatolian Fault continental - continental Transform San Andreas Fault
