Requirements specific to Macaulay Honors College

As a Macaulay Honors student, you must complete certain requirements above and beyond the graduation requirements of Brooklyn College. These include:

The four MCHC seminars , which are taken one per semester during the first two years: The Arts in New York City, The Peopling of New York, Science and

Technology in New York City, and Shaping the Future of New York. (These seminars substitute for four courses in the Brooklyn College Core Curriculum.)

Failure of a seminar will result in dismissal from the Macaulay Honors College.

At least four additional upper level honors courses (12 credits) at some point during your four-year program. These can be taken as an honors-level course offered at Brooklyn College or at the MHC Central building, or by augmenting a regular upper level course (3000 level and above) through a contract with the professor. You should discuss which classes you will use to fulfill this requirement with your director or advisor.

You must complete the honors option in your major if there is one . All students must complete an honors thesis, capstone project, or the equivalent in their major.

You must maintain fulltime enrollment (at least 12 credits) every semester, and graduate within four years . In exceptional circumstances, permission may granted by the Dean of Macaulay Honors College to take less than 12 credits.

By the end of your freshman year, you must achieve a 3.3 GPA. By the end of your sophomore year and continuously thereafter, you must achieve and maintain a GPA of 3.5

.

Each semester, Macaulay Honors College students participate in a number of common events with students from other campuses. These are scheduled to be accessible to everyone, and you must sign in and out of each one. If you have trouble getting to any of these events, arrangements must be made with your professor for a makeup assignment.

You must either complete an internship, study abroad, or undergraduate research project during the course of your four-year program. (Many students do all three.)

University Scholars complete a minimum of ten hours of community service during each of your first three years. You must document these hours online at the

Macaulay website, have the print out signed by your supervisor, and hand it in to your advisor in order to receive credit. Not all volunteer experiences count as community service so if you aren’t sure, please consults with your advisor.
