The course is suitable for Doctors (closely following RCOG requirements for modules 1 and 2), Radiographers, Midwives and
Nurses. It may also be considered useful as a refresher course or as a starting point for those considering full training.

Normal ultrasound imaging features of early pregnancy, detecting a fetal
heart, overcoming imaging difficulties, measurement of Crown-Rump Length
(CRL) and gestation sac, reporting, when to refer on.
Basic principles of ultrasound imaging
Machine set up and operation, safe use of ultrasound equipment, presets,
labelling and recording images.
Hands-on experience with a fetal ultrasound training phantoms

Appropriate use of ultrasound for presentation, assessment of placental
position, placenta praevia, when to refer on.
Anatomical landmarks for bi-parietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal
circumference and femur length, (BPD.HC.AC.FL) reference charts, error
margins.
Detection of fetal heart activity in late pregnancy, amniotic fluid index (AFI),
maximum vertical pocket (MVP), oligohydramnios and polyhydramnios –
definitions and associations, cord and Doppler studies of the umbilical artery.
