Beginning Algebra, 8th edition, Baratto /Bergman, McGraw-Hill.
Requirements: Each student must complete all assignments, quizzes, Basic Skills tests and exams. You must
have an email account and check it at least twice a week. You must also be able to access
MathZone at least twice per week. A grade of C or better is needed to pass the course.
Attendance:
Students are expected to attend all classes. Please be prompt so as not to disrupt the class.
Repeated tardiness will not be tolerated and may count as absences. Any student who misses
more than two weeks of classes may not receive a grade higher than a C-. This is not
enough to satisfy the requirement for entrance into the next math course.

Basic Skills Tests:
Three basic skills tests will be given during the semester: Basic Skills Test on Arithmetic,
Basic Skills Test on Factoring, and Basic Skills Test on Applications. The material on these
tests is needed to successfully complete the upcoming material. You must get at least 80% on
each of these tests to receive a final grade of C or higher. You will be allowed to retake a skills
test for which you receive less than 80%. However, the score from each test given in class is
what will count toward your final grade for the semester. There will be bonus points offered
for passing the basic skills test when it is given in class. See Basic Skills Guidelines for more
information.
Quizzes:
There will be two formal quizzes. There will be no make-ups on quizzes. Your lowest quiz
score (or Basic Skills Test score) will be dropped. Quiz scores and Basic Skills Test scores
will be averaged as one exam grade.

Exams:
All exams are announced and must be taken on the date specified. Attendance at the scheduled
examinations and final is required. There is no provision for absence due to vacations, family
outings and other social activities, other special plans and appointments, etc. Absences due to
illness require a medical excuse on physician’s letterhead, signed by the physician, which must
be submitted before any alternate arrangements for the exam will be considered.
Homework:
You are expected to do the required assigned homework on a regular basis. A minimum of two
hours outside work will be required for each hour in the classroom. This is the minimum.
Homework will be assigned daily from MathZone and from the textbook. Homework is due
the next class period. Homework quizzes will be given on the last class period of each week
unless otherwise indicated and will consist of problems from both the textbook and MathZone.
MathZone assignments will have due dates posted. Students should remember that to ensure
success in mathematics, problems must be done consistently and done on time. See page four
of the syllabus for complete homework expectations. In general, your ability to
communicate your mathematical thinking will be more important than correct answers.
MathZone:
MathZone is directly linked to the textbook so you will find many resources for help, such as
video lectures, practice problems and online tutoring. In addition, many homework
assignments will be completed on MathZone. To access this site you will need a course code
from your instructor. MathZone problems will be included on homework quizzes so be sure
you are showing all of your work for problems you do from MathZone as well as from the
textbook. It is your responsibility to resolve any issues with MathZone by the end of the first
week of class. If you are having trouble you should contact your instructor or call the
MathZone help line at (800) 331-5094.
Calculators:
NO CALCULATORS will be allowed on quizzes, Basic Skills Tests or exams. Therefore,
you should not use a calculator when doing the homework, as your skills will not be developed
enough to do well on in-class assessments.
Tutoring:
The following two locations offer tutoring for Math 095. No appointment is needed. You will
be given a schedule of the times available. The service is free.
 The tutoring department on campus (Panther Academic Support Services) provides walkin tutoring for Math 095 at three different locations on several different days of the week.
 The Department of Mathematical Sciences will also provide walk-in tutoring in the Golda
Meir Library (GML), WB42. There are usually some evening and weekend tutoring times
available for your convenience.
Final Exam:
The final exam will be cumulative. It will be given on Monday, December 20 from 7:30 9:30AM. Location to be announced.
