Training Course on Machine Tool Design
The rapid growth of Indian machine tool industry and the increasing sophistication of machine
tools has created the need for a new breed of machine tool designers. To meet the industry’s
need for trained engineers in the specialized field and to create a talent pool that can be
tapped, the IMTMA Design Institute has been established at Bangalore. Indian Machine
Tool Manufacturers Association (IMTMA), who has a membership of nearly 350 machine
tool companies and is actively promoted by leading machine tool manufacturers, has
sponsored the Institute under the aegis of the IMTMA Design Foundation.
THE INSTITUTE
IMTMA Design Institute has been conceived as hi-tech training center for machine tool
designers. The Institute focuses on providing intensive training in all aspects of machine tool
designing to engineers from the industry. Equipped with the latest in design infrastructure, the
Institute enables participants to strengthen their design skills. The latest design practices are
imbibed by the participants who have the opportunity to utilize high powered CAD
workstations and widely used design and analysis software. During the project work each
person will have access to a workstation.
JOINT PROGRAMME
This design course is a joint programme of IMTMA Design Institute and ICAMT
(International Center for Advancement of Manufacturing Technology).
THE COURSE
The Institute’s training programme has been structured to provide participants with in-depth
knowledge of machine tool theory and technology. This is complemented by hands on group
projects that emphasize the development of practical skills. Experienced machine tool design
faculty will guide participants who will be enabled to achieve high standards of professional
expertise. The course incorporates visits to machine tool manufacturing facilities, foundries,
pattern shops, user plants and R & D establishments to expose participants to all facets of
machine tool designing and practical applications. This is being run as non-profit and serviceoriented program to industries in India. IMTMA Design Institute has already successfully
conducted 5 Machine Tool Design courses and Machine Tool and Manufacturing related
technology seminars. These courses and programs are well accepted by the Indian industries.
FACULTY
The faculty of the training programme will consist of industry experts specialized in machine
tool design and theoretical specialists from leading institutions. An interactive learning process
will be adopted to enable participants to build practical skills on a solid theoretical knowledge
base.
COURSE ENVELOPE
The courseware for the training programme has been designed by a team that has vast
machine tool designing experience and a thorough understanding of industry needs. Utilizing
proven training methodology the course will take participants from the fundamentals to current
level of technological intricacies of machine tool designing. From conceptualization to
completion, the course covers every component of the process including management, finance
& cost analysis to produce thoroughbred machine tool design engineers. During nearly 50 % of
the duration of the course the participants are exposed to theoretical topics and during the
remaining period they work on practicals and Project work. The institute is equipped with latest
state of the art high-end Hewlett Packard CAD workstations with 2D, 3D modeling software
such as AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop and also FEM & FEA capabilities using ANSYS software.
COURSE FEE & DURATION
Fee: $ 3,000 per participant ($ 200 per week) towards IMTMA FOUNDATIONS.
Duration: 15 Weeks
Timings:
9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This fees is towards course materials, use of CAD facilities, lectures, guidance during project
work, industrial visits in Bangalore, vegetarian course lunch and coffee/tea.
If the participant is interested to undergo longer duration of training he can do so by paying
US $ 100 per week.
NEXT MACHINE TOOL DESIGN COURSE :
Starts on 18th November 2002.
LIVING CONDITIONS
For accommodation, good hotels at various tariff range starting from US $8 per day will be
available at Bangalore. The Course Organizers will help in locating the suitable ones, after we
hear from the participant in what range he needs the accommodation. Food and other facilities
in India are available at reasonable costs.

Project work on design project
 The participants could bring in his own project that could be taken up based on time frame.
 Factory visits to observe the manufacturing, assembly aspects in and around Bangalore.

Even though the course will focus on Machine Tool design aspects, the approach is
generally similar while designing any other industrial machinery so the participant can
pursue his career in any related mechanical industries after this course.
PARTICIPATION ELIGIBILITY
·
Graduate mechanical engineer with experience of 1 to 2 years desirable.
·
Fresh graduate mechanical engineers with good academics are also admissible.
·
For highly experienced designers, the condition of basic qualification can be relaxed.

This course will expose the participant to the wide domain of Machine Design & CNC
Machine Tool Design and enable them to acquire high level of competence which will equip
them to start a career in machine tool/machinery, design, maintenance, marketing and
related fields. The participants from abroad could also interact with the Indian machine
