Guidelines for Final Research Presentations
Oral Presentations
1.
Presentations are scheduled for the week Aug 1st, 2nd, and 3rd .
given your time slot the week prior to your presentation.
2.
You need to turn in the title of your talk and abstract to Ms. Shoemaker by
Friday, July 20th. Please submit these electronically by e-mail. The e-mail
address is shoemakd@musc.edu.
3.
Your mentor and other faculty and staff are invited to attend the presentations
whenever possible for them.
4.
Each student will have a 15-minute time slot assigned. You should expect to
talk about your project for approximately 10 – 11 minutes with 4 – 5 minutes for
questions.
5.
A typical talk might be organized as follows:
You will be
1-2 min – Introduction, background, hypothesis
3-5 min – Methods (How you carried out your studies)
3-5 min – Results (What you found out in your studies)
1-2 min – Discussion, Conclusions, Summary
4-5 min – Questions

We are using BE 112 for the presentations. If there is a change I will let you
know. You should be prepared to give a power point presentation. Please put
your presentation on a flash drive and take the time to check it in BE 112 prior to
the presentation to ensure the presentation is compatible with the equipment in
BE 112.
Written Papers
1.
Your paper is due on August 3rd. It should be submitted electronically to Debbie
Shoemaker. Please do not turn in paper copies of your paper – all written
papers should be submitted electronically, by email
2.
The paper should include all the appropriate graphs, charts, tables, etc.
3.
The paper should be in the style of a short scientific journal article, and should
contain the following sections: a brief Abstract, Introduction, Methods and
Materials, Results, Discussion and Conclusions, References.
4.
You are all invited to participate in Student Research Day on Friday,
