Since your teacher is a big fan of NOT reinventing the wheel and because this seemed like an interesting way for you to learn about cell organelles without having to listening to him drone on for hours – have at it!

Organelle Mapping Project

We now are familiar with the cell membrane but what other cell structures can we find inside? This week and next we will be exploring more cell structures, specifically the organelles.

These are membrane-bound structures that serve many functions in the cell “factory.”

We will also be learning how to design concept maps using software called

“Inspiration”. You have had a refresher, of sorts, on the cell organelles and to concept mapping, you will work with an assigned partner(s) to construct a small concept map using a framework your teacher will provide.

While you all will be responsible for knowing about all the organelles, each team of two or three will focus on one of the twelve organelles, specifically its structure, function and overall significance. During the next couple of classes, you will also find visual resources to illustrate your organelle.

Finally, you and your partner(s) will use the software to create a miniconcept map about your organelle, along with some visual link on the internet, then briefly present it to the class at a time to be mutually agreed upon.

Here are the organelles:

Lysosomes (in animals)

Flagella/Cilia (in animals)

Nucleus (including nucleolus and nuclear envelope)

Endoplasmic Reticulum (Rough)

Endoplasmic Reticulum (Smooth)

Golgi Complex/Vesicles

Cytoskeleton

Mitochondrion

Vacuole

Central Vacuole (in plants)

Chloroplast (in plants)

Cell Wall (in plants)

Inspiration diagrams with examples of concept maps for the cell membrane , a template for your organelle concept map , and an overall cell structures map of all the organelles (which your Inspiration concept map will fit into) will be given to you. Your teacher will also show these to you using the inspiration software.

All Inspiration documents will be handed over digitally to your teacher so that a master concept map of everyone’s efforts can be made. The plan is to put this on your teacher’s web site for your future reference. (tests?)
