SAINT SENAN’S CHURCHYARD
The first semblance of real religion came to this area with the
arrival of St Senan who built his Church in Templeshannon in the
year 512. He remained in the area for a couple of years, before
emigrating to Welsh shores. He is buried in County Clare.
Templeshannon stands in ruins today.
1
You had a very chequered career
When first Saint Senan landed here,
And built his church in the 512th year,
That’s Saint Senan’s Church yard.
2
You got your name from his source,
Which does survive today of course,
Then we had the visit of the Norse,
Who destroyed Saint Senan’s Church yard.
3
The Normans landed in seven ninety five,
And they made the area come alive,
With their pillage, rape and burning drive,
All around Saint Senan’s Church yard.
4
You were built again in great style,
And served the people for a while,
But today you really do not smile,
You’r in ruins Saint Senan’s Churchyard.
5
To the new Parish you gave the name,
Also a Hospital and a street do claim
St Senan’s as their name to fame,
From the old St Senan’s Churchyard.
6
Today you’re a graveyard and four walls,
Your graves within get very few calls,
Your stone is the only thing that falls,
In Old Saint Senan’s Churchyard.
