Darwin’s Ideas
100- What is the name of the islands where Darwin did a lot of his research?
Galapagos
200- What is the name of the ship that Darwin travelled the world on?
HMS Beagle
300- What type of traits did Lamarck think were passed on to offspring that was later
proven to be wrong?
Acquired traits
400- What is the name of the book that Darwin wrote on his theory of evolution?
On The Origin of Species
500- Why was Lamarck’s theory of evolution incorrect?
Lamarck proposed organisms can change their bodies through use and disuse
and acquired traits are passed on to offspring.
The Theory
100- What is one example of artificial selection?
Dogs, horses, agriculture
200- What is a trait which allows an organism to survive in its environment?
Adaptation
300- What is meant by the phrase survival of the fittest?
An organism that is best suited for its environment will survive and pass on its
desirable traits to offspring.
400- What is the difference between artificial and natural selection?
Artificial selection is when humans select favorable variations in a species and
natural selection is when nature selects the traits that are passed on.
500- What are 3 of the 4 factors needed for natural selection to occur?
Overproduction, variation, competition and those that can’t survive die.
Evidence of Evolution
100- What is a homologous body structure?
Structure that differ in adult form but had same embryonic tissue
200- How do embryos show evidence of evolution?
Most animals look very similar in the early embryonic stages
300- How are fossils used as evidence of evolution?
Show extinction of species and intermediate forms of species
400- What is a vestigial structure?
An organ that is so reduced in size it only resembles organs of other species
500- How does a protein such as Cytochrome C show evidence of evolution?
When many different species have the same complex protein it means that they
must be connected in some way, they share a common ancestor.
Genetic Variation
100- What is a gene pool?
All the genes in a population
200- What is genetic drift?
Random changes in allele frequencies of a population
300- What is an example of directional natural selection?
Finches with larger thicker beaks in areas with large seeds.
400- When will disruptive selection occur in a population?
When individuals at either end of the bell curve have higher fitness then those in
the middle.
500- What are 3 of the 5 factors that affect gene pools?
Mutations, genetic drift, gene flow/migration, non-random mating, and natural
selection.
Patterns of Evolution
100- What is an example of co-evolution?
Bee and flower
200- What is convergent evolution?
When dissimilar and or similar species evolve similar traits due to living in
similar environments.
300- How does geographic isolation form new species?
Population evolves into a new species due to a physical barrier.
400- What is the difference between adaptive radiation and artificial selection?
In adaptive radiation organisms from the same species evolve to fit their
surroundings due to a change in location and in artificial selection breeders
choose traits to be passed on.
500- What is the difference between gradualism and punctuated evolution?
Gradualism is the idea that speciation occurred gradually over long periods of
time and in punctuated evolution speciation occurs quickly.
