APPENDIX 2
Photographs of site locations in the Owencarrow catchment, June 2009
Site OC1
Owencarrow River, Owencarrow Bridge (C06226 25787)
Owencarrow River main channel just DS from the bridge. Quite difficult to sample as substrates consisted predominantly
of boulder/cobble overlying bedrock. Very little instream vegetation; moderate silt plume and mostly clean sands
deposited in margins and between boulders. 1 dead mussel shell observed.
Site OC2
Owencarrow River, R251 Bridge (C 04231 23385)
Owencarrow River main channel just DS from the road bridge. Fast flowing bouldery riffle/rapid. A lot of quite luxuriant
FGA in slow flowing glides and margins. No silt plume. Fauna is poor compared to habitat quality.
Site OC3
Owencarrow River, DS National Park HQ Bridge (C 04176 23058)
Not ideal sampling habitat - fast flowing bouldery rapids/ riffles downstream of a weir. Difficult to determine the outflow
point from Park HQ waste water treatment facility.
US of this point the habitat is not suitable for Q value assessment.
FGA1 quite abundant above and below weir.
Site OC4
Glasnaseeragh River (C 06185 23556)
Sampled approx 100m DS from the road. Boggy, mountain stream. Very low flows with peat + cobble substrates.
1
FGA = Filamentous Green Algae.
Site OC5
Owennacally River (C 04162 22652)
Sampled approx. 50 m US of the bridge. Small, cascading mountain stream with sections of bouldery/cobble riffle.
Site OC6
Calabber River, Calabber Bridge (C 01802 24826)
Sampled approx. 30m US from the bridge. Bouldery/cobble riffle with bryophyte plant community. Moderate silt plume
from mats of Fontanalis spp. No FGA. Generally clean sands between larger boulders and cobbles.
Site OC7
Owenbeg River, Meenamolt Bridge (B 99738 23463)
Sampled approx 40m US from the bridge. Cascading mountain stream – not ideal sampling habitat. Mostly employed
boulder and stone-washing to collect sample as there was no riffle habitat. Clean , interstitial sands. FGA in a thin layer
on most substrates.
