191 REARING CALVES
10.30 am – Auctioneer: Jon Pullin
A record entry of calves at Cirencester with new Vendors and a good trade
throughout.
Dairy Breeds (108): Tremendous entry and a solid trade with a record entry
forward. Reared Friesians (3 months) to £140 for A S Fuller. Best rearers
£65+ peaking at £72 for P G Saunders.
Native Breeds (31): Reared Hereford bulls (6 months) to £265 for L T Farms,
small Hereford bulls to £135/£140. Reared beef Shorthorn bulls (3/4 months)
to £170 twice. A lot of Angus on offer with best bulls to £250 for R J Handley,
£245 for J Millard. Reared heifers from E J Wooldridge to £228 and £220.
Heifers £70-£150.
Simmental (11): Tremendous trade. All Continental calves dearest in the
country. Top £365 for B Gough, £352 twice for Stroud Green Farm Ltd and
£352 for M Maslin. Heifers of medium quality £150-£180, no best sorts on
offer.
Limousin/Blonde (18): Superb bull calves to £350 for M T & I Scott, £340 for
Roy Townsend. Best £315+, best heifers to £232 for J W & S Cook, £225 for J
Millard.
British Blue (23): Top bull £352 for R A Williams & Son, R H & M E
Oughton and B Gough & Sons 10 over £300. Tremendous trade again. Best
heifers £240 for R A Williams & Son, medium heifers £150-£200.

£580 (110 – 125p/kg). The lesser shaped Continental heifers showing signs of a
hard summer traded between £460 - £520 (100 – 115p/kg). The native breeds
saw Hereford heifers to £655 (121/kg) from M/s S Poultney & Son, Frocester.
The smaller native breed heifers are generally harder to place trading between
£330 - £400 (80 – 90p/kg)
The younger stores (14 – 18mnths) sold to another good trade with better
Continental steers over £680 topping at £805 (144p/kg) & £755 (151p/kg) for
Simmental steers from M/s R & J Merrett, Slimbridge who consigned 114
grand Continental & Friesian steers & heifers. The general run of Continental
steers traded between £550 - £620 (130 – 145p/kg). The younger Friesian steers
sold between £320 - £350 (85 – 95p/kg)
The younger heifers also saw the better sorts in demand with Continentals
generally £630 - £680 topping at £750 (137p/kg) for Limousin’s & £710
(125p/kg) for Charolais’ from Mr T Axten, Maidenhead. The general run of
Continental heifers traded between £400 - £500 (110 – 120p/kg). The native
breeds traded generally between £350 - £400 (90 – 100p/kg)

The farming cattle (17 – 24mnths) saw the better sorts selling to a good trade
and a shade dearer. The stronger or better shaped Continental steers traded over
£700 topping at £895 (129p/kg) for a Blonde from M/s J & W Rodgman,
Kimbolton & £820 (134p/kg) for a Simmental from M/s J Jones & Son,
Cricklade. The general run of stronger Continental steers traded between £650 £700 (120 – 135p/kg) with the smaller sorts or lesser shaped £550 - £600 (110 –
120p/kg). The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £678 (140p/kg)
from M/s S Poultney & Son, Frocester. The farming Friesians traded between
£430 - £480 topping at £510 (92p/kg) from M/s D Isaac & Partners, Wickwar.

The heifers again sold fairly well with the better Continental sorts between
£590 - £650 topping at £700 (125p/kg) for a Simmental from M/s R & J
Merrett, Slimbridge. The general Continental heifers traded between £500 -
A very busy day with nearly every pen / cage full with something for sale from
Sheep, Cattle, Goats, Pigs, Llamas, and various breeds of Poultry & waterfowl,
with many people commenting on the good atmosphere around the market.

Strong Simmental cows (03) & their Charolais steer calves sold to £940 & £845
with heifer calves to £880 & £870 from Mr S Freeth, Cirencester. A British
Friesian Cow & her 2 Hereford heifer calves sold to £920 from Mr J Millard,
Chippenham.

Averages: Steers £523, Heifers £481
Blonde
A reasonable entry sold to a firmer trade with the better sorts a shade dearer
again with the 2nd & 3rd quality stock at similar trade to the last few weeks.
The strong older steers (24 – 30mnths) met a firmer trade with the better meat
sorts trading around £800 topping at £920 (128p/kg) & £845 (141p/kg) for
Charolais steers from Miss B Chiswell, Winterbourne. The good shaped
Continental finishing steers traded between £700 - £750 (130 – 145p/kg). The
native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus x steers to £710 (128p/kg) from M/s A & A
Slatter, Toddington & £690 (134p/kg) from Mr N Jackson, Cowley. The
stronger Friesian steers were a shade dearer topping at £555 (112p/kg) from Mr
J Ball, Ashbury.
The stronger older heifers saw the better shaped or meated Continental sorts
over £650 topping at £690 (125p/kg) for a Simmental from Mr P Gantlett,
Bushton. The general run of Continental heifers traded between £550 - £600
(115 – 125p/kg). The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus heifers to £720
(117p/kg) from Mr A Young, Purton.

Overall Average – 157p/kg
A similar entry sold to a good trade with all lambs well sold. The best
handyweight export type lambs were in short supply trading between 161 –
165p/kg topping at 167p/kg £70 for 42kg from M/s Breakspear & Son. The
medium quality lambs seemed well sold trading between 155 – 160p/kg. The
heavier lambs saw most of the better meated sorts which traded between £74 £76 topping at £79.20 for 52½ kg from M/s B & D Gilder.

Short numbers met a similar trade to last week with all types on offer keenly bid for.
Best Continental cows topped at 123p for a 730 kg, Marchigiana from Messrs
Breakspear & Son, British Blue from the same home 730 kg at 120p. John Herdman
also sold Blue 710 kg at 121p.
The best Continental cows all over £1/kg with a few less fit sorts well sold in the
9op+ bracket.
Friesian cows sold to 80 and 88p for B M & D J Gilder, mainly 2nd/3rd quality sorts
on offer, 65-70p with the plain cows 40-50p.
Angus steers sold to 129p for F J Nutland & Son and Friesian heifers reached 131p
(660kg) for C B Powell & Son. G F Ripley & Son consigned their Limousin bull 915
kg at 103p.
POULTRY REPORT

For the time of year an excellent entry of poultry with a large number of young
birds. A firm trade throughout thanks to a good number of buyers.

Overall Average - £61.12
A good entry sold to a firmer trade with another buyer in attendance. The best
good meated Suffolk & Continental x ewes traded between £75 - £85 generally
topping at £99 with the best Mules a very good trade £70 - £76.50. The half
meated & plainer ewes seemed very well sold in comparison trading between
£55 - £65 with the smaller ewes £45 - £55 generally. Slaughter rams & wethers
sold to £135.

A reasonable trade saw a few stronger sorts over £60 topping at £67 with
medium lambs £53 - £58. The smaller sorts traded between £40 - £46.

Another huge entry of pigs including a range of breeds colours and sizes. In
general, the stronger killing type in good demand, half finished a solid trade,
but the smaller weaned pigs tougher to place going into the autumn and with the
cost of feed in mind.
26 sows on offer saw the best types trade to £172 for W J Winning and £150 for
W Middle and P A Scott. Generally £130-£150 was the range, 50-60p per kilo
with the plainer feeding sows £112 - £120. 5 boars on offer selling to a similar
trade to top at £130 for Ms L Muller.
Bacon pigs sold to a top of £84 from M/s Barkshire with a good pen of fit pigs
from A R & A Smith at £80. Best types £71+, store pigs sold to £56 & £65 for
Neston Home Farm Ltd, best strong stores £40-£45, medium rears £25-£36
with the slip pigs (white) £17-£25, coloured slips very hard to sell at £5-£12.

Steers 137p/kg Heifers 138p/kg
Again our trade was sharper with more needed to meet demand. A few very
good cattle (U+ grades) topped at 174p/kg for a 450kg Limousin heifer &
164p/kg for a 525kg Limousin steer from M/s Breakspear & Son. The
commercial cattle (O+ - R grade types) sold exceptionally well trading between
137 – 144p/kg. The lesser shaped sorts (O+ & O- grades) traded between 115 –
120p/kg generally.
