Job Description POST: Science Technician Term Time Only POST NO: VB0012 HOURS: 37 hours per week (1.0 FTE) SALARY: £15,965 – £17,064 per annum pro rata FACULTY: Sixth Form Studies LOCATION : Lansdowne Job Summary The post holder will be responsible to the Head of Sixth Form College and will provide support for a dedicated and committed team delivering a range of A level and Access to HE courses. The post holder is required to facilitate the effective and efficient running of laboratories on the Lansdowne site in Bournemouth working closely with the Team Leader for Science & Maths as directed, carrying out the work of a Technician Duties and Responsibilities Work in connection with the post holder’s own specialisation as required. Maintaining, repairing and fabricating apparatus and equipment.. Preparing and testing experiments for delivery by science staff Supporting lecturers in the laboratory with the delivery of practical lessons (added) Assistance with experimentation and practical projects in workrooms as directed Ensuring workrooms, equipment and apparatus are clean, tidy and well maintained. Carrying out health and safety risk assessment activity Preparing apparatus and materials as directed. Reclaiming reusable materials and disposing of out of date materials and equipment (made into new point) Sourcing and ordering required equipment and reagents. Detailed Responsibilities Work in connection with the post holder’s own specialisation as required (mainly Chemistry & Biology) Maintaining, repairing and fabricating apparatus and equipment (including assistance in demonstrating such apparatus and equipment) Assistance with experimentation and practical projects in workrooms as directed Ensuring workrooms, equipment and apparatus are clean and well maintained (and operated in accordance with sound educational practice and current health and safety regulations) Care for plants and animals if required Carrying out health and safety risk assessment activity and every aspect of COSHH work Liaise with the College Health & Safety Officer Preparing (including setting up and operating equipment) apparatus and materials as directed. Reclaiming reusable materials and disposing of out of date materials and equipment Issuing and receiving materials, equipment and apparatus from stores and completing appropriate inventory records and/or computer inputs Maintaining an adequate supply of materials, equipment and apparatus Assisting in the organisation and delivery of fieldwork Maintaining science notice boards Assist academic staff in the production of training and learning materials as appropriate Assist the Science and Maths team leader Equal Opportunities. Experience and/or technician qualification. Detailed knowledge and competence to assist in preparing, maintaining and demonstrating standard equipment and practicals used in Advanced Biology, Chemistry & Physics courses. Excellent knowledge of COSHH. Record keeping. Ability to carry out risk assessment. Ability to use IT i.e. word processing, spreadsheets and internet. Good facilitator Flexible. Methodical & thorough approach to tasks. Works on own initiative but also capable of working in a team. Able to relate well to staff & students. Willing to attend open evenings if required (maximum three a year) DESIRABLE CRITERIA Degree in Chemistry, Biology or Physics Using IT in Science experiments. Experience/ willingness to supervise/mentor others
