LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
(Full Time)

Position:
Laboratory Technician
Salary:
£14 per hour
Contract:
Probationary period of 3 Terms, followed by a permanent contract.
Reporting to:
Head of Science
Working closely with:
Head of Chemistry and Biology
Contracted Period of Work Hours: 8.00 am - 3.00 pm Mon to Fri (May need to be flexible), term
time only.
Purpose of Job
In this role you will provide technical support to the chemistry and biology teachers, contributing to
students' learning experience by assisting with the preparation of materials and apparatus for
practical work, which on occasion may require innovation.
Applicants would also be required to keep stock checks, place orders, take care of deliveries and
invoices as well as keep accurate financial records. Keeping all chemistry and biology laboratories,
including the Preparation Room, tidy and safe is an important aspect of the job.
Key Skills
Applicants must have previous experience and familiarity with the safe handling of chemicals and
scientific equipment typical of a school laboratory.
A good understanding of laboratory safety is essential as is a science background including
qualifications in GCSE and A level chemistry and biology. A higher qualification is also highly
desirable.

Maintenance:
• Taking care of laboratory equipment and apparatus • Carrying out and arranging for maintenance
and repair of equipment • Constructing and modifying apparatus if required • Stock taking and
organising the safe storing of chemicals and equipment • Ordering materials from suppliers
Operational:
• Trialling practical activities • Making up solutions, assembling apparatus, delivering equipment to
rooms. •(Very) Occasionally assisting in class practical including carrying out demonstrations •
Caring for plants and/or animals, where appropriate • Collecting, checking and returning equipment
to stores • General Laboratory cleaning: bench surfaces and fixed equipment (laboratory sinks,
emptying/supervising the emptying of sink traps) • Disposing of waste materials
Technical:
• Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities • Keeping up to date on CLEAPSS guidelines
for practical activities and chemical use/storage • Keeping up to date with developments in practical
science and health and safety requirements • Carrying out health and safety checks on laboratories,
prep rooms and stores.
General:
• Attend and participate in staff and working group meetings and training as appropriate. • Adhere
to and work within Chelsea Independent College practices and policies including those relating to
Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Safeguarding of students.
