JOB PURPOSE 1.1 To set up and maintain equipment, apparatus and materials necessary to ensure that lessons run smoothly and practical work can be carried out efficiently and safely in the Performing Arts faculty Drama, Dance and Music) 1.2 To provide lighting and stage support 2. JOB CONTEXT Technicians support a wide range of departments from Science to Visual Arts to Food Technology to ICT etc. As such, there will inevitably be individual variations in what equipment and materials are maintained, stored and used and what specific security and health and safety guidelines apply. The Performing Arts Technician currently services 5 areas ( classrooms/workshops), the hall and a recording studio all based on one site. 3. MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBLITY 3.1 Provide technical support to the department such as lighting and audio 3.2 Carry out minor repairs to equipment and apparatus and adapt and construct same as required, maintain repair records and report non-repairable faults to the Head of Department 3.3 Set up apparatus and other support materials/equipment correctly and in time for the relevant lesson/assessment/external examination etc and prepare and issue all other relevant resources such as ingredients, wood, card, stock solutions, paint and other chemicals etc as and when needed 3.4 On receipt of requests from teaching staff for said apparatus/materials/equipment accompanied by their associated risk assessments and the subsequent preparation of appropriate equipment and materials, provide teacher with relevant safety advice on their use, storage and (where applicable) disposal - including but not limited to CLEAPSS Hazcard cards. Clean, maintain and store all equipment, apparatus, chemicals and other material used by the department in conformity with School and government security and safety standards including (but not limited to) COSHH and general Health and Safety standards. 1 3.5 Carry out demonstrations as and when required 3.6 At the end of each day check that the relevant workshops, teaching areas, laboratories and preparation areas have been left tidy and safe and take any corrective action necessary, including (but not limited to) clearing away and storing equipment and materials and disposing of waste materials 3.7 Regularly review departmental stock levels, inform Head of Department of any shortages and re-order/order stock as directed 3.8 Assist BTEC students to produce tickets and posters for all course related performances 3.9 Support the Recording Studio, to be familiar with recording and sound editing with Cubase, Audacity and Sibelius. 4. REPORTING LINES 6.1 For performance management purposes this role reports to the Head of Department 6.2 On a day to day basis the jobholder works under the direction and supervision of the teacher to whom he/she is assigned and may work with several teachers. 6.3 No roles report to the job holder . 7. CONTACTS 7.1 The jobholder works with all members of staff in the school and has frequent contact with parents and visitors. That said, 7.2 Key interfaces IN (i.e. in terms of taking from another services or information central to the job holder’s ability to perform their job effectively) are: 7.3 Teaching Staff for schemes of work, return of unused/dirty materials and equipment for disposal/cleaning and risk assessments External suppliers of equipment, chemicals and contract engineering services Caretaker for resolution of physical problems with laboratory fixtures and fittings such as leaking gas taps etc Key Interfaces OUT (i.e. in terms of providing services or information central to another job holder’s ability to perform their job effectively) are: Teaching staff 3 8. KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING 8.1 A minimum qualification of either: Part one City and Guilds ONC/OND BTEC Or an equivalent thereof 8.2 Performing Arts technical experience to include knowledge of lighting equipment 8.3 Experience of working at Height (mobile tower, ladders and stepladders) 8.4 Understanding of current relevant Health and Safety Regulations such as COSHH 8.5 Ability to mend, adapt and construct apparatus and equipment 8.6 Ability to organise own work 8.7 Ability to work in a team. 8.8 Understanding of the needs of children. 9. PROBLEMS AND DECISIONS 9.1 From time to time there are potential clashes in demands for equipment or materials held in school. It is the job holder’s role, in conjunction with the technicians and teachers, to resolve these by, for example, rescheduling work. 9.2 From time to time the physical resources (equipment or materials or both) to meet a particular teaching demand will not be held by the school. This then involves the post holder in identifying suitable external suppliers and arranging their delivery. At times this may involve simple a simple ordering process but at others (e.g. due to budget constraints or the fact that this is a one-off need) the post holder may, for example, have to liaise with non-commercial sources, such as other schools, in order to identify someone who is willing to lend the school the requisite resources. This calls for a greater degree of initiative and inter-personal skills than is required by a normal ordering process and is also more timeconsuming 9.3 All non-routine decisions outside of the above are referred upwards. 10. DIMENSIONS 10.1 10.2 10.3 The work is varied and has daily, monthly and termly and yearly routines However whilst much of the day to day work comes via the requisition book and subsequently provides the job holder with limited opportunities to organise their own work load, there is a requirement for some elements of forward planning (e.g. ordering, growing and looking after geraniums!) when supporting the introduction of new courses and this can be for up to a year ahead of the actual course implementation The curriculum supported by this role includes A level work 4 11.
