CHUGD Guidelines on outcrop core sampling

Whilst it is recognised that coring of outcrops may be necessary for
palaeomagnetic, geological, geochemical and related studies in the UK and
Ireland, its indiscriminate use is unacceptable.

All essential coring should be carried out in a responsible and environmentally
acceptable way, paying particular attention to the likely visual impacts of such
activities.

All researchers undertaking such sampling need to be aware of their legal and
social responsibilities, especially in relation to likely prosecution if such
activities are carried out on SSSIs and other geological localities of classical
geological importance

Where possible, necessary coring should be restricted to areas of outcrops that
minimise the damage and visual impact of such activities (for example behind
outcrops).

All drill holes should be plugged after use and the surrounding area made
good

Grid references and photographic records or digital images of all such
activities should be maintained by individuals or research groups in
departments and should be available on request by the HoD or his/her
nominee.
