VISUAL ARTS
Drawing & Painting. Instructor: Bob Travers. Mondays (10 am-12 pm) (1-3 pm,
dates TBA), Tuesdays (10 am-12 pm, 1-3 pm, 3:30-5:30 pm), ongoing, depending on
openings; fee is $80 for 4 lessons. Four to five separate weekly class sessions
(depending on the season) available for kids (age 8+), teens, & adults. Each
class is appropriate for beginner through advanced. Students work at their own
pace, with their choice of medium & subject. Bob Travers is a graduate of the
Pratt Institute & an award-winning wildlife artist who teaches in oil, acrylic,

Pottery Classes: 2-hour classes are available at various times Mon.-Sat.
Fee
is $135 for 6-weeks, which includes Open Studio practice times, plus a $50 Lab
fee that covers 25 lbs. of clay, glazing & firing. Dates: May 19- June 28 AND
June 30 – August 9 Instructors: Geoff Bird, Charles Freeland, and Mathilda
Tanner along with Guest Teachers for Workshops. Registration Deadline is 2 days

separate printed schedules. Independent Study option is available for
experienced potters who need no instruction – application necessary. $80
monthly. Clay extra.
Summer Adult Clay Camp with Maureen Joyce! July 14-18. $200 including clay glaze
and firing
MUSIC
JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians).
Instructors Cary Fridley, Ben Nelson and
Meredith Watson. For grades 3-9 (ages 8-14). Registration: Wednesday, March 5
from 3:30-5 pm. Semester: begins again in September. JAM students learn to play
traditional Appalachian tunes by ear & play with small groups on banjo, guitar &
fiddle. Home schoolers welcome. Some instruments available for rental. JAM is a
regional program; BMCA hosts the Buncombe County classes.
Summer Appalachian String Camp for 4-8 graders with Cary Fridley July 14-18 14pm. $125
Music Lessons.
Instructor: Joe Dinwiddie. Wednesday afternoons. For
Beginning PIANO students, ages 7 through adult, or for Beginning or Intermediate
BANJO students, high school & adult. Fee: $25 per ½ hour, or $40 per hour lesson,
payments must be made one month in advance of lessons. Joe Dinwiddie, a wellversed musician, earned his B.A. in Appalachian Studies from Berea College (KY) &
while there initiated curriculum development in regional music. He also served
as a state arts-in-education artist at the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. In
addition to piano & banjo, he plays banjolin, harmonica, & jawharp, sings, & is

Suzuki Violin. Instructor:
Keithie Knowles. Tuesdays, 2:30-5:45 pm.
Fee: $25 per ½ hour. Age 4-6 with parent. Suzuki violin is a method & educational
philosophy used in teaching instrumental music to young children, using the
principles of language development. Initially, learning is by hearing or rote,
with many repetitions. Reading comes later. This is a long-term commitment.
Suzuki students listen daily to recordings of music to be performed, beginning
with simple folksongs. A parent must attend weekly private lessons with the
student, acting as the "home teacher" & supervising daily practice. Skills are
mastered in small steps, always with the support & encouragement of the parents &
teacher. Violins can be rented locally from Acoustic Corner. Knowles, a graduate
of Oberlin College, has been teaching Suzuki violin since 1984, & has served on
the faculty of the Furman University Suzuki Institute.
DANCE & CREATIVE MOVEMENT
Ballet Studio. Instructor Casey Kristofferson Littlejohn. Ongoing classes start
monthly.
Primary:
Sat. 9 - 9:30 am (1/2 hour lesson); $36 a month.
Level One:
Sat. 9:30 - 10:30 am (1 hour lesson); $40 a month.
Intermediate Sat. 10:30 - 12:00 pm (1.5 hour lesson); $46 a month.
Adult Ballet: Mon. & Wed. 9 – 10:30 am (1.5 hour lesson); $46 a month.
All fees are payable by the first session of the month. Casey is a member of the
Asheville Civic Ballet, and also teaches dance at Artspace Charter School.
Required attire: ballet slippers + leotard & tights for females; leggings & white
tee for males.
Yoga in Motion taught by Viniyoga Instructor Renate Rikkers.
Two ongoing
classes for adults: Begins Tuesday, 6:00-7:30 pm and Friday, 9-10:30 am. Fee: $55
for 6 weeks. Improve posture, balance, & strength through the practice of yoga
postures. Some yoga experience is necessary. With questions & to register, call

T’ai Chi Qi Gong taught by Charles Pannell. Ongoing. $40 per month/$12
drop-in. Thursdays 10 am. Practice the art of moving meditation, a set of
simple movements that serve to improve blood flow and increase circulation,
boost concentration and energy, restore balance, lower blood pressure, reduce
stress, and calm the mind and heart. The owner of the Thrifty Taoist, Pannell
has studied traditional and classical Chinese medicine for years and been
teaching QiGong since 2007.
Contemporary Dance for Children taught by Amy Maze ongoing weekly starting
All classes $40 per month/ $12 drop in. Attire: Comfortable clothes, cleansoled sneakers or bare feet, NO blue jeans.
Tween Dance
ages 11-14 Monday 5-6 pm
Suitable for middle school and up. No previous experience necessary. Classes
alternate between athletic contemporary and hip hop styles to improve
coordination, musicality and develop core strength.
Kids in Motion ages 3-5
Thursday 3:30-4:30 pm
Combination of creative movement and basic acrobatics. Helps develop
coordination, increase spatial and rhythmic awareness, flexibility,
perception and memory.
Beginning Hip Hop/Contemporary
ages 6-10 MONDAY 4-5pm OR Thursday
4:30-5:30pm
Up-beat combination of hip hop and contemporary/modern dance styles allowing
for freedom of expression while learning basic dance skills.
Ballroom Dance. Instructor Micaela Scobie.
Mondays, 6-7 pm. Each session is
6 weeks. Fee per session: $110/couple or $60/individual. Focus: Waltz, Tango
& East Coast Swing. Minimum # of students required: 6. Ballroom is a twoperson dance, but coming with a partner is not required. Come prepared to
have fun! Micaela Scobie, accomplished in American-style Ballroom dance, has
competed in numerous regional events, receiving high honors.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography 101 with Ray Mata: Wednesdays 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, MONTHLY $75.
Ray Mata of Blue Ridge Pictures offers professional pointers on composition,
lighting, and techniques to improve your photographs. Regardless of
experience level, this class will cover your specific questions and focus on
your needs. Mata has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Loyola Marymount University
in Los Angeles, with a broad background in photography from fashion to
portraiture, film, and video.
