DANCE & CREATIVE MOVEMENT
Ballet Studio:

$25 registration fee for new students and for students who have left class for
more than a month.
Drop in fees: $12/ 30 minute, $15 /one hour, $17 /1.5 hour. Sibling
discount/multi-class discount.

All fees are payable by the first session of the month. Casey is a member of the
Asheville Ballet. Cecchetti ballet is a nationwide accepted exam process and one of the
oldest and purest forms of ballet training still provided today. Training provides a
solid foundation in classical ballet that would support any professional ballet career.
Registration fee is to encourage consistency in attendance and training.
Required attire: ballet slippers + leotard & tights for females; leggings & white tee for
males.
Contemporary Dance for Children:
Taught by Amy Maze ongoing weekly. All
classes $40 per month/ $12 drop in. All fees payable the first session of the month.
Attire: Comfortable clothes, clean-soled sneakers or bare feet, NO blue jeans.
Kids in Motion
ages 3-5
Thursday 3:30-4:30 pm
Combination of creative movement and basic acrobatics. Helps develop coordination,
increase spatial and rhythmic awareness, flexibility, perception and memory.
Beginning Dance
ages 5-7
Thursday 4:30-5:30 pm
Up-beat combination of hip hop and contemporary/modern dance and musical theater
styles allowing for freedom of expression while learning basic dance skills. Good for
strength, coordination and flexibility.
Intermediate Dance
ages 8-11
Mondays 4-5 pm
Geared towards students with some previous dance experience, this class an extension
of the concepts learned in Beginning dance. This class will work with contemporary,
jazz and musical theater styles.
Teen Dance
ages 12-up Monday 5-6 pm
Suitable for middle school and up. No previous experience necessary. Classes alternate
between athletic contemporary and hip hop styles to improve coordination, musicality and
develop core strength. Learn a combination each class.
Dance Troupe
ages 6-up Thursday 5:30-6:30
Gives dancers performance opportunities in the community. Next enrollment October 2015.
Dancers must be enrolled in a class. $30.
Qi Gong: Instructor Melanie (Mela) Carreira Fridays 4-5pm $50 monthly/ $15
drop-in
Qi Gong, or "energy work," is a powerful form of internal exercise and meditation.
Silk Reeling Spiral Power Qi Gong is a special set of spiraling movements designed to
gently relax the muscles, integrate the body, and open up the energy pathways.
Through Qi Gong, standing meditation and circle walking, practitioners improve
health, vitality, and clarity of mind from the inside out. Mela, a student and
assistant instructor to Master Frank J. Paolillo of the Tao Institute, has been
practicing martial arts for 14 years and teaching since 2006.
Yoga in Motion: taught by Viniyoga Instructor Renate Rikkers.
Two ongoing classes for
adults: Tuesday, 6:00-7:30 pm and Friday, 9-10:30 am. Fee: $55 for 6 weeks. Improve
posture, balance, & strength through the practice of yoga postures. Some yoga experience

This class takes a summer hiatus. Classes resume September 8 and 11.
VISUAL ARTS
Pottery Classes:
Two-hour classes are available at various times Mon.-Sat. Fee is
$135 for 6-weeks, which includes Open Studio practice times, plus a $50 Lab fee that
covers 25 lbs. of clay, glazing & firing. Current session 7/16 through 8/12. Next session
8/17- 9/23. Instructors: Geoff Bird, Charles Freeland and Mathilda Tanner. Registration
Deadline is 2 days prior to first class. Click on CLAY icon on our website for more info
or see separate printed schedules. Independent Study option is available for experienced
potters who need no instruction – application necessary. $80 monthly. Clay extra.
Drawing & Painting: Instructor: Bob Travers. Mondays (10 am-12 pm) (1-3 pm,
dates TBA), Tuesdays (10 am-12 pm, 1-3 pm, 3:30-5:30 pm), ongoing, depending on
openings; fee is $80 for 4 lessons. Four to five separate weekly class sessions
(depending on the season) available for kids (age 8+), teens, & adults. Each class is
appropriate for beginner through advanced. Students work at their own pace, with their
choice of medium & subject. Bob Travers is a graduate of the Pratt Institute & an awardwinning wildlife artist who teaches in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor & more. For more

MUSIC
JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians):
Instructors Cary Fridley, Ben Nelson and
Hannah Seng. For grades 3-9 (ages 8-14). Registration: Wednesdays, (first
session): September 9 through December 16 Cost: $140. Tuition payable in two
parts of $70. Session 2 starts in January. JAM students learn to play
traditional Appalachian tunes by ear & play with small groups on banjo, guitar &
fiddle. Home schoolers welcome. Some instruments available for rental. JAM is a
regional program; BMCA hosts the Buncombe County classes.
Celtic Harp: Instructor Sue Richards. Tuesdays. $50 for 45-minute lesson.
All ages and abilities welcome. Instrument taught by ear, with music to follow.
Students must own or have access to a harp, but can use Sue's second harp at
lessons.
Richards won the American National Scottish Harp Championship four times and sat in
with the Chieftains Irish band. She currently teaches and directs the harp program at
the Ohio Scottish Arts School at Oberlin, and has many recordings and books of
arrangements and original tunes to her credit. Richards also plays and tours with
Ensemble Galilei, a group of five musicians performing multi-media concerts
commissioned by the National Geographic Society and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
WRITING
BMCA hosts the Great Smokies Writing Program, a joint effort between the UNC Asheville
departments of Literature and Language, Creative Writing and the Asheville Graduate
Center. September’s instructors are popular poet

and fiction writer Heather Newton Wednesdays 6-8:30 pm 9/16-11/25.
