For Beginning PIANO students, ages 7 through adult, or for Beginning or Intermediate BANJO students, high school & adult. Fee: $25 per ½ hour, or $40 per hour lesson, payments must be made one month in advance of lessons. Joe Dinwiddie, a wellversed musician, earned his B.A. in Appalachian Studies from Berea College (KY) & while there initiated curriculum development in regional music. He also served as a state arts-in-education artist at the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Tuesdays, 2:30-5:45 pm beginning January 7. Fee: $25 per ½ hour. Age 4-6 with parent. Suzuki violin is a method & educational philosophy used in teaching instrumental music to young children, using the principles of language development. Initially, learning is by hearing or rote, with many repetitions. Reading comes later. This is a long-term commitment. Suzuki students listen daily to recordings of music to be performed, beginning with simple folksongs. A parent must attend weekly private lessons with the student, acting as the "home teacher" & supervising daily practice. Skills are mastered in small steps, always with the support & encouragement of the parents & teacher. Violins can be rented locally from Acoustic Corner. Knowles, a graduate of Oberlin College, has been teaching Suzuki violin since 1984, & has served on the faculty of the Furman University Suzuki Institute for many years. This class offers participants 21 simple movements for lifelong comfort and ease. Students learn these natural movement that address aging factors such as breathing, joint mobility, spinal flexibility, coordination, balance and more all while sitting in a chair while listening to upbeat music. T’ai Chi Qi Gong taught by Charles Pannell. 6-week session January 9 – February 13. $60. Thursdays 10 am. Practice the art of moving meditation, a set of simple movements that serve to improve blood flow and increase circulation, boost concentration and energy, restore balance, lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and calm the mind and heart. This is a flow-oriented class about finding one’s own rhythm in T’ai Chi for health and nourishing life. Charles Pannell is a licensed acupuncturist. He is the owner of the Thrifty Taoist in Black Mountain. He has studied traditional and classical Chinese medicine for many years and been teaching QiGong since 2007.
