Surgical Technology Program Student Scrub Role Definitions The “scrub” student surgical technologist shall be observed performing the following duties during any surgical intervention, with proficiency: • Check supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure • Scrub, gown and glove • Set up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medication/solutions needed for the procedure • Perform or assist with the performance of appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the procedure and before the incision is closed • Gown and glove additional surgical team members • Assist with draping the sterile field • Pass instruments and supplies to the sterile surgical team members during the procedure • Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during a procedure • Prepare sterile dressings • Perform terminal activities of cleaning, preparation of instruments, supplies and the OR “Solo” First Scrub Role (Solo): The student surgical technologist shall perform more than 90% of the scrub role duties during any surgical intervention, with proficiency. “1st” Scrub with Assist Role (STSR): The student surgical technologist shall perform more than 70% of the scrub role duties during any surgical intervention, with proficiency. “2nd” Scrub Role (STSR2): The student surgical technologist performs less than 70% of the scrub role duties during any surgical intervention. Ass’t Circulate/Observe (STAC): The student surgical technologist assists circulator and scrub person with room and procedure set-up, patient preparation and room turn-over. (6/10)
