Wilbarger General Hospital Vernon, Texas Job Description Job Title: Operating Room Scrub Technician / LVN Department: Surgery Job Summary: The scrub nurse is responsible for the smooth functioning of nursing activities during the surgical procedure. This person is in sterile attire, and therefore, is not free to move out of the sterile area. The primary role of this nurse is to know thoroughly the particular surgical procedures, anticipate the surgeon’s need, and efficiently carry out instructions. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I. Job Qualifications: A. Education: Graduate of accredited School of Vocational Nursing or having been waivered by Certified Board testing, or received certification in Surgery Technology. B. Personal Job-Related Skills: Effective oral and written communication skills. C. Licensure, Registry or Certification: Licensed Vocational Nurse currently licensed by the State of Texas Board of Nursing or the Board of Certified Surgical Technologists. BCLS and ACLS preferred. D. Experience: 1. Prior work experience: One year experience as a professional Registered Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Certified Surgical Technologist in operating room preferred. 2. Technical Training: Revised 09/26/2011 Current CPR Certification. E. Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may become weak or helpless. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: A. Having a thorough knowledge of the surgical procedure. B. Help circulating nurse assemble all supplies needed for the particular surgical procedure. C. Scrub, gown, and glove self and other team members for the operative procedure. D. Prepare equipment and packs for use in the operative procedure. E. Set up case: 1. Prepare drapes. 2. Prepare mayo and back table. 3. Prepare sutures, needles, etc. F. Drape patient or assist physician with draping. G. Handle instruments correctly and assure their proper functioning. H. Knows and uses principles and techniques of operating room asepsis. I. Observe sterile technique at all times. J. Assists with patient draping. K. Sponge, needle, and sharps counts are made before and after the surgery with the Circulator and documented. L. Must anticipate the surgeon’s need for supplies and equipment. Remain alert to surgeon’s needs. M. Save all specimens and inform Circulator of source. N. Functions as scrub assistant in the O.R. O. Functions as first assistant as necessary. P. After procedure, remain in room until the patient is transferred to the R.R. Revised 09/26/2011 Q. At the end of the procedure, care for all used and unused instruments and equipment according to procedure. R. Help clean room as necessary and prepare supplies for the next procedure. S. Relieves as necessary and assists as necessary in the Recovery Room and Outpatient Surgery Department. T. Responsible for training for use of Accudose, Smart Pump, and monitors. U. Takes emergency call as necessary. V. Cleans and wraps instruments for sterilization and restocks the department when they are returned from C.S. W. Daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning and expiration date check is done as assigned. X. Responsible for weekly supply and suture order. Y. Apply educational principles by: 1. Assisting with the orientation, training and education of personnel. 2. Teach and direct other personnel assigned to work under their direction. Z. Maintain High Professional Standards by: 1. Demonstration of changing trends in nursing. 2. Active participation in conferences, classes, and meetings. 3. Application of scientific principles in performing nursing procedures, knowledge or the rationale for nursing actions. 4. Supports and interprets the hospital philosophy, objectives, and policies. 5. Be certified in CPR. AA. Maintains sterilization and sterilization supplies for all departments in the hospital as well as some physicians’ offices. BB. Reports autoclave failures immediately to O.R. Manager and Maintenance. CC. Responsible for cleaning and wrapping instruments. DD. Must maintain all sterile/autoclave records. Other Significant Requirements: A. Provides care to patients based on standards recognized and approved by the administration, the physician, and the licensing authority.
