Shining Star Musical Theater Peter Pan Dear Shining Star Families, February 12, 2016 Spring is in the air, just in time to spring us into the final stretches of this year’s Shining Star production! The time has come to start looking for costumes. We won’t start collecting costumes at the school for another two weeks, but start looking now! You’ll find the comprehensive costume list attached for this year’s production. The costumes are listed by each character, and then listed by scene if they have more than one costume. Have a discussion with your actor about their costume. A great resource for purchasing is eBay, Etsy, and thrift stores. Most of the costumes this year can be easily assembled from pieces, hodge-podge, which will add to the feeling of “make believe” playtime! For the most part we want our production to look natural, spontaneous and organic in the sense of how real kids play and not prefabricated (a la the dear beloved Disney). Everything should have a feeling of raw kid energy to it, instead of carefully polished. Another factor we should all keep in mind is that our children will be wearing these costumes in the heat of June under hot stage lights. Breathable fabrics and outfits that they can sweat in and still be comfortable are the best. The descriptions below indicate how the costume should look- but remember that a “coat” or “jacket” can just as easily be cotton as wool! Please find as much as you can. Let us know as soon as possible if you have any difficulties finding clothes, by sending a note with your child to rehearsal. ALL CLOTHING MUST BE LABELED or it will not be accepted! The actors know their characters and can help you pick out costumes. Please find as much as you can. Let us know as soon as possible if you have any difficulties finding clothes. If you have any questions concerning costumes, please call or email us: (212) 873-0490 OR lionjill@gmail.com (email is preferred!) Dates to send costumes in: May 14 – 5th grade bring in costumes May 21 – 3rd & 4th grade bring in costumes Thanks for all your help and support – watch for news about set painting! Optional, but boy would this be great: Leaves covering the tunic. This adds to the “natural/organic” feel, making Peter Pan seem more like a spirit of the forest than a real boy. You can actually order precut cloth leaves: http://www.etsy.com/listing/57899200/emerald-isle-value144-felt-leaves LOST BOYS (Isabella Stannard, Mikayla Yurman, Hannah Turer, Hailey Cunningham, Ellen Binstock, Sabrina Green, Isabel Podolsky, Priyanka Gupta, Anna Herrera, Miranda Jackel) Basic costume: (Dominant colors Blue, Green, Greys and Brown) The story of Peter Pan starts in the early part of the 1900’s, but we don’t know when the Lost Boys arrived in Neverland. Because of this, we have a wide range of options of clothing for the boys, basically any children’s clothes before 1915. Last year The Music Man Shining Star performed had early 1900’s boy clothes (below as an option), and the kids from Annie Get Your Gun would also be a good source of inspiration. Basic guidelines for the Lost Boys are sloppy clothes, maybe ill-fitting, but not drab! Colorful tops! Keep in mind that blue jeans didn’t hit the clothing world until after 1915 (though grey jeans material might have been around), and nobody was wearing Page 5 of 12 Shining Star Musical Theater Peter Pan sneakers in the modern sense. Don’t be afraid of checkers and plaids, or clothing that looks like pajamas—it would make sense if the Lost Boy arrived in Neverland wearing pajama bottoms! LOST BOYS (continued) All past-shoulder length hair will be up and close to the head in buns; shorter hair can be worn down, with a lidless hat. All Lost Boys should have: Shoes: brown or tan loafers. Ballet flats can work in a pinch. A colorful patch sewn somewhere noticeable (chest, arm, knee, on behind) Optional: Kerchief, in earth tone (brown, tan) Suspenders Caps, Newsboy style, beanie or raccoon Single-breast vest, black or dark navy Lost Boys, Your Choice! The “faux suede” fabric used in these prefab costumes is a very unbreathable synthetic polyester, which is very uncomfortable to wear under hot lights in June! We’ve also know many children to have allergic reactions to the synthetic material, which is like wearing a plastic bag on your skin. If you choose to order a costume online, we’d like to suggest that you order from a true Native American company instead of cheap foreign reproductions. The money will go to supporting Native Americans’ livelihood and culture preservation, and the natural materials are more earth friendly and much more comfortable for your child! http://www.whitefeatherdesign.com/kids.htm http://www.indianvillagemall.com/mocs/childernmocs.html All Indians should have: Shoes: brown or tan loafers. Moccasins would be great! Headband with feather, can be any color Brown leather or suede Fringe! Added to pants, edge of vests and/or wrist cuffs.
