ST PETER’S CHURCH TORKSEY Following an appeal for volunteers to help tidy the Church yard last Monday, 25th April, the Church received a wonderful response. Over thirty volunteers arrived for 10.00am and set about removing a vast amount of accumulated rubbish and unwanted vegetation. Graves and headstones are now seeing the light of day for the first time in many years, and dead trees and plants, which did not survive the winter, have also been removed. The moss which had attached itself to the church fabric was also cleared away along with any weeds which had grown along the footpath around the church. The drains, taking away roof water, were also thoroughly cleaned and the concrete pathways pressure washed. Last, but not least, two volunteers managed to seal two large cracks in the tower roof, which have been letting water into the roof space and bell chamber, causing a lot of damage to the roof timbers and the floor below. The recent fine weather had allowed the roof to dry out and it was essential that this job was completed before more wet weather could cause further damage. I have been careful not to name any particular individuals because the effort put in by all who attended was exceptional. Some measure of the amount of work done can be gained if I tell you that four small lorry loads of rubbish was taken away at the end of the day, enough rubbish to fill three large skips. The Church graveyard is now completely transformed, and has to be seen to be believed! Grateful thanks from the Parochial Church Council to all those who responded so positively, as a result of your efforts the Church will look a real picture for the open days on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May 2011. VILLAGE GREEN POND The ground is now well dried out and Council is waiting to complete the final arrangements for battering to take place. No demands for membership fees have been sent out thus far as the pond water level will need to be kept low until after battering, when stocks will hopefully begin to recover. Until the Health and Safety issues have been resolved it would seem wise not to issue new membership cards. Fishing can of course take place at your own risk, and hopefully some news of your success will be gratefully received as a judge of the number fish which have survived the winter.
