Convention on Adibashi Jonogosthi O Sylheter Poribesh (Indigenous Community and Environment of Sylhet) Organized by: Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) and Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST), Sylhet Call for Papers Respected Sir/Madam, You are invited to submit your abstracts and full paper(s) for presentation at the Expert Sessions of the Convention on Adibashi Jonogosthi O Sylheter Poribesh (Indigenous Community and Environment of Sylhet). The deadline for submission of papers is December 15, 2011. Selected works will be published in a volume of Convention Proceedings. The Convention will be held at Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST), Sylhet on January 14, 2012. Papers must relate to one of the Convention sub-themes as listed below: Convention Theme Indigenous Peoples and Their Role: Protection of Environment in Sylhet Sub-Themes A. Background and History 1. The nature of kinship network of indigenous communities; 2. Social and economic structures and networks; 3. The nature of land and tree tenure systems; 4. Jhum (sweeden cultivation), its practices and consequences; 5. Religious, linguistic, and cultural history and practices; 6. Ethno-botanic practices of indigenous people; 7. Sources and state of herbal medicine; B. Changes and Transition 1. The changing nature of traditional, social, economic, political and cultural organizations; 2. Demographic changes; 3. The impact of in-migration and out-migration; 4. Changes and disruptions in social and cultural networks; 5. Religious changes, diversity and tolerance; 6. The changing pattern of agriculture production system and its impact; 7. Disforestation and its causes and consequences; 8. Forest policy and politics; history of political participation; 9. Hill landslides and its causes and consequences; 10. Resource extraction and use – gas, coal, dams; 11. Impact of Eco-park on indigenous people; 12. Impact of modern communication and transportation; 13. Aggression of Development; 14. Health issues - use of traditional and new methods; and 15. Tea Garden and Tea Community C. Contemporary Issues 1. Policies and laws with respect to property, economy, and public finance 2. Representation in the local and national government; 3. Health issues- traditional healing methods/adoption of modern health systems and access to modern health care; 4. The state of the health care system; 5. State of water and sanitation; 6. The state of educational attainment; 7. Gender disparities and gender Issues; 8. Reproductive health and mortality; 9. Participation by indigenous people in non-traditional economic activities and investment; 10. Poaching and illegal activities; 11. The role of international development partners and NGOs; 12. Development policy and donors; 13. Environmental laws and policies; 14. The traditional economy, society, and culture of the adibashi people in Bangladesh; 15. The environment of the habitats of the adibashi people; 16. Recent changes in the economy, society, and culture of the adibashi people; 17. Recent degradation of environment in the habitats of the adibashi people; 18. Ways to protect adibashi rights and help them modernize while preserving their distinctive cultures and their relationship with environment; 19. Energy and water issue; 20. Employment and monetary issues: 21. Adibashi conceptions of development; and 22. Ways to protect environment of the adibashi habitats. Presentation Medium Papers may be written and presented in either Bangla or English. Abstract and Paper Requirements · Abstracts should conform to the following requirements: o Abstracts should be in a range of 200 to 400 words. o Full contact information of the submitter, including email address and phone number, should be included at the end of the abstract. This information will not be published in the Convention Proceedings. · Full papers should conform to the following requirements: o Papers should not exceed 6000 words, 11 point font, 1.5 spaced. o The paper submitter should underline their name in the list of authors. o Papers should include references and proper citations. o Provide any grant acknowledgments for your research (i.e., NIH-AI13028) at the end of your paper. Selection Process A Technical Sub Committee of the COC convening by Professor Dr. Tulshi Kumar Das, Department of Social Work of SUST will make final decisions regarding the acceptance of the paper and the published proceedings. If your paper is selected for presentation or publication, you will be contacted by email or telephone shortly.
