Before school from 7:45 – 8:10 AM and after school Monday, Tuesday, and
Friday in Room 355
COURSE DESCRIPTION: A thorough treatment of advanced algebraic concepts is provided through the
study of functions, equations, inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, polynomials, rationals,
radicals, complex numbers, logarithms, exponentials, conic sections, matrices, trigonometry, and
sequences and series. Along with algebraic algorithms, the class will include graphical, numeric, and
verbal approaches to the material. This course has an End Of Course Standards of Learning (SOL) Test.
TEXTBOOK: Carter, Cuevas, et. al., Algebra 2, Glencoe McGraw Hill, 2012. The textbook and extra
resources may be available on-line through your Blackboard account.
SUPPLIES: Students will need a binder with space for class notes, handouts, tests and quizzes, and
homework, and both graph paper and lined paper. You should also have pencils (regular and colored) and
a clear ruler. A graphing calculator (TI-83 Plus or TI-84) will be used daily for classroom instruction.
Calculators will not be shared in class during tests and quizzes; students must have their own.

Tests are given for each unit. Calculators may or
may not be used, depending on the material
covered. Quizzes are given as the class
progresses through a unit. Calculators are
generally not used on quizzes; again, it depends
on the material to be covered.
There is both a midterm and a final in this course. The midterm and the final each count as 10% of the
overall grade for the year. Math department policy is that all students will take the final exam.
Student grades reflect student achievement and not student behavior. Quarterly grades will be rounded
up at .5 or higher. Final grades will be calculated and letter grades assigned according to APS policy.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS AND PROCEDURES
 Students are expected to behave in a manner that helps create an environment that is
conducive to learning for everyone in the classroom. Students are expected to show respect
for other individuals, including fellow students, teachers and staff members.

Students are expected to participate actively in the classroom every day. Bring to class a
notebook, pencil, and graphing calculator. Students are expected to take class notes.

Regular attendance is essential for success in this class. Students who are absent are
responsible for making up work, including obtaining and turning in assignments and obtaining
class notes from a fellow student. For an excused absence, there is one additional day for
each day of absence to turn in homework. In case of absence on the day of a test or quiz,
students are expected to take it on the day the student returns to school unless other
arrangements are made.

Students should seek extra help as soon as they have difficulties. Algebra is a cumulative
subject, and concepts build on one another. Getting help now will make learning later
material much easier.

All work must be done in pencil. Students need to be free to make mistakes. Work done in
pen will not receive credit.

Tests and quizzes are to be completed in the time assigned. Students may not finish tests or
quizzes at lunch or after school.

Homework will be assigned daily. The assignments for the week will be posted in the
classroom and on the web page. Homework will be graded based on effort, problems
attempted, and work shown including the original problem. Complete homework
assignments will receive 2 points. The student will receive 0 points if the work is not legible
or not completely shown. To receive 1 point at least 75% of the assigned problems must be
complete. Homework collection methods will vary – be prepared to have homework collected
every day.

Homework quizzes will be given frequently and are unannounced. The questions will follow
very closely the homework assigned. You may use your homework and notes but not the
textbook during these quizzes. If you have an excused absence, homework quizzes are not
made up and will not be counted. However, an unexcused absence or unexcused tardy will
result in a zero for the homework quiz.

No food or drink in the classroom. The use of cell phones or other electronic devices in the
classroom is counter to school policy and will not be allowed unless specifically indicated by
the teacher and used for instructional purposes.
Classroom procedures are designed to promote active learning by all students, every day.
