9th grade English / Language Arts Kent Roosevelt High School 2012-2013 Syllabus Mrs. Vlajkovich Course Objective: To develop writing and reading skills necessary for success in the workforce and in the world at large beyond high school. We will accomplish this through our study of: -various genres of literature -vocabulary; grammar/usage and mechanics -essay writing skills, including MLA style -research Supplies: Students are expected to bring ALL supplies and other distributed materials to class each and every day unless otherwise noted by the teacher. You will need to following supplies for this class: -a two pocket folder - Optional -one composition notebook for English ONLY -loose-leaf notebook paper -pencils and blue or black pens -one 3-ring binder - 1.5” recommended Attendance & Make-up work: Good attendance is essential to succeed in this class. It is the student’s responsibility to determine what assignments have been missed; it is not the teacher’s responsibility to remind students about make-up work. Please refer to the student handbook for more information about make-up work and the attendance policy. If you have an excused absence, follow these steps: -check the make-up folder for the days you missed -consult the teacher for further instructions and deadlines -ask classmates for help *Summative late work will be accepted for half credit up to one week of the original due date! *No formative late work will be accepted, unless the absence was excused. Conduct: Follow our classroom rule: “Treat others as you wish to be treated.” Please follow directions without argument or attitude. All students are expected to comply with the guidelines, rules, and procedures stated in the student handbook. General misconduct procedures: -first offense=verbal warning -second offense=private student-teacher conference/possible call home -third offense=detention/office referral Tardiness: Tardiness will not be tolerated in this class. I expect you to be on time each day ready to work! On your fourth tardy you will have a consequence through me, and on your fifth tardy, you will receive an office referral. This follows the student handbook guidelines for discipline. Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism of someone else’s words or ideas is not tolerated in my classroom. Cheating or copying answers on a quiz or test is not acceptable either. Please refer to the student handbook for further information regarding academic dishonesty. I recognize that English is not every student’s favorite or most successful subject; however, I expect you to do your best and work with your own skills, not someone else’s. Please refer to the handbook for more details about academic dishonesty. Grades: Grades will be based on a weighted point system. Weights: Formative work, also known as, homework, classwork, and participation will be worth 40% of each student’s grade. 60% of the grade is summative work which includes tests, quizzes, projects, papers, and presentations. Cell Phone Policy: Cell phones and other electronic devices are not be seen in the classroom.
