Help the Foodbank While Shopping at December’s First Friday
Find unique holiday gifts, view exhibits from local and guest artists, catch a performance installation piece
Dayton, Nov. 24, 2010 – The next free monthly downtown art hop will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Dec. 3 at:

New to the event is the First Friday Holiday Food Drive. The evening of First Friday, collection bins for canned
goods will be available at nearly every participating location listed above, and all donations of nonperishable
food items will go to the Foodbank. The only organization of its kind in the Dayton area, the Foodbank assists
with hunger relief efforts through the acquisition and distribution of food in Montgomery, Greene and Preble
counties. It provides food to nearly 100 local food pantries, community kitchens, shelters and similar groups.
Neighborhood bar J-Alans, which will be collecting food donations through Dec. 6, will host a First Friday Holiday
Food Drive celebration with music acts Kris Hanson, Nine False Suns and Magic Jackson starting at 8 p.m.

New downtown restaurant and bar De’Lish will host a grand opening from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, in its newly
remodeled space across from Victoria Theatre. The event will feature samples from De’Lish’s eclectic menu,

Nearly 30 local artisans will sell their wares during Dayton’s third annual Handmade Holiday, which will be held
during First Friday and again from 2 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, in the Cannery District at 424 E. Third St.

Two annual gift galleries will feature one-of-a-kind items: The Cannery Art and Design Center will present its
fourth annual “Live Art, Give Art,” which runs through Dec. 31, along with live jazz and artwork by the more
than 50 artists CADC now represents. Open from 5 to 8 p.m., the Dayton Visual Arts Center will feature its
“ARTtoBUY Holiday Gift Gallery,” which includes original art and fine craft by more than 75 artists, some of
whom will be on hand during First Friday to give demonstrations of their work. DVAC also will host the exhibit
“Reflections: Paula Willmot Kraus and Terry Welker.” ARTtoBUY and the exhibit are open until Dec. 29.
In a temporary space next door to DVAC, as well as at its permanent home at 913 N. Keowee St., the Dayton
Printmakers Cooperative will hold its annual benefit print sale. Prints and portfolios also will be on display, and
refreshments will be served. The sale continues from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, when there will be
demonstrations by Ray Must at the facility on Keowee Street and Andrea Starkey at the space on Jefferson. For

Gallery 510 Fine Art, in collaboration with the Blue Sky Project’s Rodney Veal, will present Seen/Unseen, a
performance art installation piece that includes a live performance at 7 p.m. during First Friday. The gallery also
will be highlighting original artwork perfect for holiday giving, including the annual Oregon Arts District calendar
filled with new watercolors by gallery owner Loretta Puncer.
Elaine Balsley Fine Art will host an exhibit of work by three guest watercolor artists from Southwestern Ohio,
which will be on display through Dec. 30. Connie Barrett, whose work is acquired by private and corporate
collectors throughout the world, will display her original paintings of birds in winter settings, along with prints of
her prize-winning watercolors of trains. Joan Arnold, who shows her artwork throughout the tri-state area and is
known for painting with minute detail, will display Christmas sheep prints and cards featuring Santa Claus.
Virginia Shanholtz will display the age-old art of wheat weaving, made from materials from her family farm, as
well as her unusual Christmas ornaments.
Also in the Oregon Arts District, 5th street clayworx will feature a holiday open house with refreshments and
door prizes. The gallery will feature a wide range of unique stocking stuffers, along with numerous serving pieces
for holiday entertaining and other functional pieces of art. The open house also will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4,
from noon to 8 p.m. Color of Energy will show work by gallery owner Mike Elsass, along with the art of Jennifer
Rosengarten, Ann Kim, Ben Norton, Amanda Baker and Darren Haper. ReCreate will feature original art,
instruments and other music-related items.
K12 Gallery for Young People will host an opening reception for an exhibit of work by artist Rebecca Sargent,
who will show recent collages and studies for her paintings. Refreshments will be provided, and K12 will have its
annual gift gallery open for holiday purchases. Cachet G! International Boutique and Gallery will host an exhibit
of dolls by Frances Turner and art by Marilyn Page. In Stepp Design & District Antiques will remain open late
and feature a variety of items for gift-giving.
Jay’s Seafood, 225 E. Sixth St., will host local music ensemble Puzzle of Light starting at 9 p.m. Call 937-222-2892
for more information and reservations. In addition, all the restaurants, retail shops, bars and clubs, Wiley’s
Comedy Niteclub, Urban Krag Climbing Center, and other establishments throughout downtown will be open
