Laboratory Manager (Payclass 9 / 10)

The Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research (CeBER) is a research intensive, cross-disciplinary research centre, based in the
Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT. Its research portfolio spans across Biohydrometallurgy, Bioprocess Engineering and Algal
Biotechnology. CeBER strives to equip scientists and engineers at the postgraduate level with expertise that will allow them to excel in
every sector of the bioprocess arena, from research to industry.
CeBER is home to six academic staff, eight research and administrative staff, four to eight postdoctoral fellows and some 35 – 40
postgraduate students. CeBER is seeking a dynamic, competent and enthusiastic laboratory manager.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the affairs and interests of the Centre’s laboratories in consultat ion with the
Centre’s Director and management team. In addition to organising the smooth operation of the laboratory and maintenance of its
infrastructure, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring good lab practice and the highest standards with respect to HSE.
S/he will provide training to the students on laboratory methods and setting up of experiments.
Requirements for appointment at Payclass 9 / Payclass 10 level include:
•
A tertiary qualification – a BSc degree and a postgraduate qualification with 3-5 years’ experience or a Btech degree with significant
experience (5 years or more)
•
have significant experience (3 - 5 years) in the research environment
•
have specific experience in managing a laboratory
•
be familiar with and able to operate and maintain a range of analytical equipment such as GC, HPLC, spectroscopic and
electrophoretic instrumentation, as well as experimental equipment
•
be knowledgeable on current health and safety practice, best laboratory practice and its implementation.
Key competencies for appointment at Payclass 9 include:
•
technical aptitude
•
the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment
•
interpersonal skills
•
good interaction with undergraduate and postgraduate students
•
good communication skills
•
excellent organisational skills, planning and multi-tasking skills.
For appointment at Payclass 10, the incumbent will fulfill the following additional requirements and key competencies:
•
have significant experience (5 years or more) in the research environment
•
have aptitude, and preferably experience, to conduct student training and mentorship
•
demonstrate high level expertise in a range of analytical equipment such as GC, HPLC, spectroscopic and electrophoretic
instrumentation, as well as experimental equipment
•
demonstrated leadership capability showing accountability, and initiative and judgment in decision-making
•
ability to communicate effectively through seminars and training sessions
•
experience in advising on experimental protocols
The level of the appointment will be matched to the experience of the successful candidate, as decided by the selection committee.
The annual cost of employment, including benefits is between the following ranges:
•
Payclass 09: R 255 044 and R300 021
•
Payclass 10: R 317 843 and R373 890
