Job Description Job title: Department/School: Grade: Location: Senior Technician – Centre for Power Transmission & Motion Control(PTMC) Department of Mechanical Engineering Technical Grade 6 Fluid Power & Associated Laboratories in 8 East Job purpose To provide technical support, advice and guidance in the field of power transmission and motion control to the academic, research and technical staff in the various laboratories and facilities in Mechanical Engineering Department Source and nature of management provided The post holder will be line managed by the Departmental Technical Supervisor but will work closely with both academic and research staff across the various Faculty and Departmental research groups. Staff management responsibility The post holder will be responsible for setting their own workload and priorities in conjunction with academic and research staff. In addition, he/she will be responsible for the supervision of any technicians working in laboratories. Career and Professional Development Activities Special conditions Although based in the main departmental laboratories, the job may involve working at times in any of the Department’s specialist laboratories. Lifting and handling of heavy and/or large objects is a necessity although training will be given and lifting/handling aids are provided where appropriate. Contact with chemicals, solvents, adhesives, oils, fuels etc. is part of the job and again PPE is provided along with COSHH assessment sheets for the materials. To be flexible and to assist with technical duties in other Faculty of Engineering & Design departments, if requested by the Director of Technical Services, in liaison with the Heads of Departments, Technical Managers and Technical Supervisors, due to variations in workload, staff shortages or re-organisation. From time to time you may be asked to assist in the facilitation of CPD activities. This will form part of your substantive role and you will not receive additional payment for these activities. Page 1 Main duties and responsibilities Using a high degree of technical expertise, provide technical support for research and teaching across the Faculty, advising and assisting academic, research and technical staff and students at all levels including: 1 To work as part of a team of technicians supporting the above Groups and Centres in both teaching and research. 2 To be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the wide variety of equipment within the Department’s inventory including multi axis simulation table, hydraulic equipment, vibration equipment, etc. To support the research and teaching activities in the laboratories. 3 4 To be responsible for the supervision of technicians working in the laboratories. 5 To be responsible for the maintenance and inventory of the laboratory equipment 6 To manufacture specialist parts and components to support laboratory testing as required. 7 To instruct and teach students in the safe operation of a variety of engineering machine tools such as lathes and milling machines, etc. To be responsible for the checking, cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment as required. 8 9 To maintain safe working areas and a high level of housekeeping within the Department’s laboratories and test facilities. 10 To be responsible for the maintenance of a clean and safe working environment and to be the designated custodian for assigned laboratory space. 11 To liaise directly with staff, researchers, technicians and students regarding all aspects of testing in the laboratories. 12 To comply with both statutory and university health, safety and environmental protocols. You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager.
