JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title:
Senior Laboratory Technician

Job Purpose:
To supervise a team of technicians and ensure the provision of
a complete laboratory technical resource to the school.
Main duties and responsibilities:
1. To oversee the work of laboratory technicians, ensuring the supply of
materials and equipment for classes and external examinations.
2. To ensure that equipment, chemicals and specimens are prepared for
practical lessons and examinations, including constructing and setting up
equipment as required.
3. Working under the instruction/guidance of the teacher to support and
supervise pupils during lessons.
4. To carry out induction and performance reviews of technicians, ensuring that
appropriate training is given as necessary,
5. To ensure that laboratory safety regulations and necessary precautions and
requirements are met; ensuring that laboratories and equipment are kept
clean and tidy, including checking equipment for safety and advising students
of safety aspects of particular experiments.
6. To arrange for the safe disposal of chemical, biological and radio-active waste
as directed by the Head of Science, observing appropriate safety and
environmental considerations.
7. Purchase of supplies in accordance with school purchasing policy. Control of
stock and annual stock check and the development and maintenance of a
computerised stock control system.
8. To ensure that statutory records of poisons, inflammable liquids, alcohol and
radio-active materials are maintained and that all materials are correctly
labelled.
9. To ensure that records of breakages and loans are maintained and that filing,
catalogue systems and price lists are kept up to date.
10. To ensure that departmental first aid kits are maintained.
11. To ensure that statutory checks on electrical equipment are carried out when
required and to maintain general equipment in good order.
12. To organise the cleaning and sterilisation of apparatus as required.
13. To ensure that plants and animals are properly cared for.
14. To assist with photographic processing as required.
15. To organise the testing of demonstration experiments.
16. To assist teaching staff with the design and construction of apparatus.
17. To assist staff and students in the laboratories, including demonstrating
equipment and experiments as required.
18. To maintain confidentiality at all times in respect of school-related matters and
to prevent disclosure of confidential and sensitive information.
19. To undertake any other duties of a similar level and responsibility as may be
required from time to time.
