What attracts us to this particular amusement-park ride? Designers incorporate factors such as gravity, acceleration, and an awareness of what people fear to create a ride of thrills. The scientific principle that drives a coaster is the transfer of potential energy to kinetic energy. The potential energy is based on the height of the first hill. The higher the object ascents, the more potential energy is built up. When the coaster starts to go down the hill, potential energy becomes kinetic energy. This type of energy propels the coaster through the track. It builds and carries the cars up subsequent hills, thus creating additional potential energy. The ascents and descents, along with the shift between potential energy and kinetic energy, result in changes in speed. This adds to the excitement of the ride. Individual components of a roller coaster contribute to the overall ride. Running wheels keep the coaster on track while friction wheels control the lateral motion. An additional set of wheels keep the coaster on track even if inverted. Compressed-air brakes halt the machine at the end of the ride. Roller coasters generally are constructed out of one of two types of material: wood or steel. Coasters made of steel can travel higher, faster, and incorporate loops. Wood coasters usually aren’t inverted, don’t have loops, and don’t travel with as great a speed. So what makes wooden coasters especially thrilling? They sway more. The rickety feel of the track increases the thrill of the ride. Why do we feel a roller coaster is thrilling? As gravity pulls us down, we feel the upward pressure of the ground, or the weight beneath us (in this case, the roller coaster car). Another force that affects us is the acceleration. As the coaster speeds up and slows down, we feel pressure from different directions. The movement of our bodies is separate from that of the roller-coaster car. As the machine changes speed or direction, it acts as a force to change our motion. We don’t fully understand these forces, which only add to the excitement as our bodies experience the unknown for each twist and turn of the ride. 1. Find the word acceleration in the passage. On March 6, 2007, a 6.3-magnitude quake destroyed dozens of buildings, killed at least 70 people, and injured hundreds of others. It was followed by several aftershocks, or smaller earthquakes. The quakes sent people running from their homes in search of safety. "We all just fled as quickly as we could," an Indonesian worker told reporters. The worker was in the seaside town of Padang when the ground began to move. Padang is just a few miles southwest of the epicenter of the earthquake. The epicenter is the area above the underground point where the earthquake begins. Many people living near the ocean ran for higher ground during the tremors. They feared that the earthquake would trigger giant waves similar to the devastating tsunami that hit southern Asia and eastern Africa in December 2004. That disaster was caused by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Sumatra. Fortunately, the March 2007 earthquake was not powerful enough to cause a similar disaster. The earthquake was strong enough to topple buildings inland. The megalopolis of Solok suffered the most damage. Hospitals there ran out of beds for injured people. Cots were set up for patients being treated for cuts and broken bones. The islands that make up Indonesia are located along the Ring of Fire. That is an area along the edge of the Pacific Ocean where Earth's tectonic plates push against each other, often causing earthquakes and volcanoes. In parts of Indonesia, an average of five earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5 occur each year. 1. Find the word megalopolis in the passage.
