Element Symbols for 7th Grade:
Elements are represented by Chemical SYMBOLS – usually 1 or 2 letters. If there is one letter it is
CAPITALIZED, if there are 2 letters – the first is CAPITALIZED, the second is not.
Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) – it is the “stuff” that everything is made of
Atom: the smallest unit of matter- makes up all matter- building blocks of matter
Element: matter that is made up only 1 type of atom – listed on the Periodic table of Elements
All matter is made of elements or combinations of elements
Molecule: 2 or more atoms of DIFFERENT elements joined together, smallest part of a compound
Compound: 2 or more elements chemically bonded together
