Job Description

Overall Purpose of the Job
To deliver on the job occupational training to companions at Emmaus Cambridge.
Working closely with the support team to facilitate each companion working through over a period of
time the Emmaus Cambridge companion development portfolio.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible to the Community Director in terms of











Play an active involvement in community life
Introduction of the training portfolio during induction of companions into the community
Completing personal development plans with companions
Liaising with training organisations
Identification of external training opportunities for companions
To ensure that personal information is shared appropriately with the whole staff team
To ensure that all companion records and information is maintained in coordination with other
staff and in compliance with policies, procedures and the data protection act.
Day to day pastoral care of all companions
Assisting with moving on companions who request it
Ensuring the ethos of Emmaus adhered to and applying community rules with fairness.
Participate in staff meetings and contribute to decision making
Business functions and responsibilities



On the job work training of companions in line with Emmaus Cambridge training programme
Dealing with general public and customer care
Promote the concept of ‘solidarity’
Other Duties
 Active involvement in the delivery of the strategic plan for Emmaus Cambridge
 Attend meetings and liaise with external agencies
 Perform any other tasks or duties deemed necessary by the Board of Trustees
General
Emmaus works with vulnerable people. Staff and volunteers must observe the proper demarcation and
professional boundaries while performing their role.
The post holder must always act in a way which will maintain the good reputation of Emmaus
Cambridge, upholding the policies and procedures of Emmaus. The post holder will strive to preserve
good working relationships with Staff, Volunteers, Companions and the Trustees, keeping the
appropriate key personnel well informed of significant matters relating to the Community
We expect you to carry out your job responsibilities in an environmentally aware manner. Our aim is
to ensure all resources are utilised effectively and efficiently. You will be expected to apply sound
‘value for money’ principles in undertaking purchasing or supply of goods and services.
In Emmaus, volunteers are an important resource and make a vital contribution to Emmaus’s aim to
take action to help disadvantaged people. You will be expected to encourage, develop and support
volunteer involvement in our work.

Essential
Education:
 GCSEs or equivalent including passes in English and
Maths subjects
Desirable
Education:
 Other related professional education/training
Skills:
 Easy and friendly manner demonstrating empathy,
fairness and professionalism
 Good communication and motivational skills
 Willingness to ‘muck in’ and undertake a range of
tasks within the community
 Effective time management and organisational skills
 Effective written and verbal communication skills, to
include occasional public speaking
 Effective IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel,
and internet and email
 Conflict resolution, negotiator
 Customer service
 Analytical and problem solving skills
 Ability to work with a diverse group of people including
formerly street homeless people, ex-prisoners and
those with mental health problems
 Good negotiating skills and proven abilities to mediate
in situations of conflict
 Methodical and organised approach to work
 Ability to work unsupervised
 Ability to follow through and obtain results
Experience:
 Proven experience in people management and
leadership

homelessness
 Health and Safety: Fire safety, COSHH, manual
handling, risk assessment, first aid, food hygiene
 Knowledge and experience of warehouse
management
 Knowledge of second-hand/antique furniture and
