Oakley Elementary School is one of 100 schools in the Fulton County School district. The Fulton
County School System is one of the most unique school systems in the nation.
As the fourth largest school system in Georgia, and the largest charter district, Fulton has
more than 13,000 full-time employees, including more than 6,800 teachers and other
certified personnel, who work in 100 schools and 14 administrative and support buildings.
During the 2011-12 school year, approximately 93,000 students will attend classes in 58
elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 16 high schools (includes two open campus high
schools) and 7 charter organizations (some charters have multiple campuses but are
considered one school).
Oakley is located in Union City, Georgia. It was built in 2007 on land donated by D.R. Horton Real Estate
Incorporated in Oakley Township, which bears the school name. Oakley ES was built to relieve the
overcrowding of Campbell ES, E.C. West ES, and S.L. Lewis ES. Our original enrollment topped at 950
students, which was reduced by about 200 students due to redistricting in 2008.
The demographics of Oakley Elementary reflect the following:
Race – 86.1% African American; 8.61% Hispanic; 2.02% Multi-race; 1.35% Asian; and 1.35% white
Federal: 84% Free and Reduced meals
Classification: 5.9% Gifted; 8.6% Special Education; 25% Remedial; 1.62% both Remedial and Special
Education; 4.9% English as a Second Language (ESL)
Oakley Elementary provides a rigorous and relevant instructional program with emphasis also on
building relationships. In addition to focus on Georgia Performance Standards and researched-based
best practices, we also enrich our students with many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular
activities such as field trips, school assemblies, Jr. BETA, Student Council, Robotics, Accelerated Reader,
Scholastic Book Fair, Spelling Bee, Science Fair, writing, technology, and art competition, cheerleading,
basketball team, Red Ribbon Week, Black Month activities, Career Day, etc. Students are constantly
recognized for their achievements during reading celebrations, semester awards assemblies; articles in
our school newsletters; weekly announcements on our TNN Broadcast; Student of the Month
luncheons, and display of work throughout the building.
Parents are very important to our children’s success. We provide various opportunities, coordinated by
our Title I Parent Liaison, to obtain their input in the school decision-making process through PTA, Local
School Advisory (LSAC), and surveys. We keep them informed through our website, Phone Messenger,
and three monthly newsletters. I-Moms and I-Dads Breakfast, Parent University, Curriculum Night, and
CRCT Night are a few programs offered to support parent education. Family Math Night, Student
Showcase, Trunk n’ treats, and Santa’s Workshop are opportunities for families to spend quality time
learning and having fun together. Our parent volunteer numbers and hours steadily increase due to the
coordination of our Parent Liaison, also.
The staff at Oakley Elementary is committed and dedicated in making a difference for all our children.
The majority of our staff has been with us since 2007, with an average of ten years experienced. All
teachers are either in or have completed post graduate work for masters’ degrees, specialists’ degrees,
or doctorates. Two staff members have obtained their Ph.D.
Technology has come to Oakley Elementary School in many forms. Through various funding (Title I,
grants, PTA, General Budget) many new computers, printers, scanners, e-beams, Promethean Boards,
hand held devices, and a wide variety of software are available to students and staff to “educate our
children for the world”. The Media Center is fully automated with scanners to process check-in/outs and
inventory control. Through technology our teachers have easy and quick access to student data to
improve instruction to meet individual needs through differentiation and increase student achievement.
We are very proud of our partnership with Bank of America and Delta. Through “Everybody Wins”,
employees of these corporations come to read with our third, fourth, and fifth graders one day a week
for eight months of the school year. Data has shown that this has made a positive impact on student
achievement and motivation. Our partnership with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department has brought
the G.R.EA.T. (Gang Resistance and Education Training) to our fifth graders to promote character
building/anti-bullying and positive decision-making. Other partners that have supported Oakley
Elementary through financial contributions, certificates, recognition coupons are Subway; Smart Kids are
Us, Chick-fil-A, and McDonalds. Their generous donation of both time and money has helped each and
every student at Oakley Elementary School.
