In Recognition of Holly Conkling, Fiona Ku, Nastassja Kuznetsova, Elizabeth Perna
2012 Organic Lawn Care Poster Contest Winners
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Township Committee of the Township of Bernards to promote
matters which benefit the health, welfare, comfort, and safety of the citizens of the community, and
WHEREAS, lawn pesticides and synthetic fertilizers can be harmful to people, pets, wildlife, soil
microbiology, plants, and natural ecosystems and can run off into streams, lakes, and drinking water,
and
WHEREAS, Integrated Pest Management is defined as the coordinated use of pest and
environmental information and all available pest control methods to prevent unacceptable levels of
pest damage by the most economical means with the least possible hazard to people, property and the
environment, and “Organic Lawn Care” is the more commonly recognized terminology of relevance
to home owners in managing their lawns without lawn pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, and
WHEREAS, Bernards Township adopted on 12/23/2008 Resolution #080520 covering its Integrated
Pest Management practices and titled “2008 Pesticide Management System Resolution”, which calls
for “all citizens to make every effort to participate on their own property”, and this call-to-action
requires a level of community outreach and communication, and
WHEREAS, to further this communication need, the Environmental Commission sponsored a 2012
Organic Lawn Care Poster Contest in conjunction with the Bernards Township School District,
offered to District 5th graders, to benefit the children and increase community communication efforts
in regard to Organic Lawn Care,
WHEREAS, students from each District 5th grade grammar school submitted posters with one
student’s poster selected as the winning poster from each grammar school,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, by the Township Committee of the
Township of Bernards that we do hereby congratulate all participants and the four winning students
on their accomplishment.
