St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin November 14th & 15th, 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time GOOD THINGS IN THREES On this Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we get a three-fold consolation from the scriptures. All three readings today were written in times of duress or persecution, and all three offer their original readers and us today the message of hope. Daniel’s audience was in desperate need of assurance that God would be their source of salvation, for Israel was undergoing one of its most violent periods of persecution at the hands of the Greeks, a time that produced the Maccabean revolt and the familiar Jewish festival of Hanukkah. The author of Hebrews was writing to a group of people unsure about leaving behind the faith and rituals that they had been told for generations would be their source of forgiveness. In return, they received the strong message that they would be able to find everything in Jesus Christ. Mark’s readers were under Roman persecution, rekindling the fear and confusion that they felt immediately following the death of Jesus. These three authors facing tough times were still able to provide optimistic messages. THE LORD, OUR INHERITANCE As wise men and women of faith have always done, when today’s authors needed to look forward in faith, they also looked back. We look back at their writings today for our hope, and, like them, we can also look at the psalter— Israel’s prayer book—for help. Today’s psalm text reminds us that with the Lord at our side, nothing can truly shake us. We know that God will not abandon us, and that if we walk with the Lord true life will be ours. We are at that time in our Church year when we hear much about the coming of Christ in glory as we get ready to re-enter Advent, our season of preparation for his return. Most likely we are not undergoing the extremes of persecution or trials that the first audiences of today’s readings were; but we can, through a deep praying of the psalms and a fervent hearing of their words, be reminded to keep our lives and our faith focused only on God, the one source of our being and our life. Today’s Readings: Daniel 12:1–3; Psalm 16:5, 8–11; Hebrews 10:11–14, 18; Mark 13:24–32 Fr. Undoubtedly, it would not be a normal day. The point of today’s Gospel reading is that the end-time is always imminent. The good steward remains prayerfully alert, ready to give an accounting; and living each day in the awareness of the coming judgment and salvation. How do we exercise stewardship over our daily lives? Are we prepared to give an accounting? How will we allow Christ to work in and through us to prepare for the reconciliation of the heavens and the earth? Collection ST. MICHAEL Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners, Next week’s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development needs your help. CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding organizations that help individual help themselves. Your contribution will defend human dignity and reach out to those living on the margins. Please be generous to the CCHD Collection. I have been asked to spread the word about another more local organization that is providing a Thanksgiving dinner for individuals and families that would not be having a Thanksgiving meal or a place for a hot meal. Dinner will be served at the Arts & Enrichment Center on November 25th, from 11:00am to 2:00pm. It will be free of charge for those in need. This November let us all focus on our blessings and be more mindful of God’s gifts, and more aware of the needs of others around us. So perhaps a good exercise for November would be to write down, some things for which we are truly grateful. Focus on things you sometimes take for granted – the warm home in which you live, the sunshine that peeked through a cloudy day, the bright redness of a leaf on the lawn, the faithful presence of your spouse. And during this month of thanks, remember to give thanks to the risen Lord. God bless and don't forget to keep up the 'good' work. Fr. Now that the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia and the Synod on the Family in Rome has concluded, let us be especially thankful for the Catholic Church and its many religious and lay leaders. As Matthew Kelly says about our Church, “Every single day, the Catholic Church feeds more people, clothes more people, visits more imprisoned people, takes care of more sick people, and educates more people than any other institution on planet earth could ever hope to.” Whether we are parishioners, lay volunteers, parish leaders or office staff, we have all been blessed with special gifts to serve the Church. With our Church’s strong foundation on which to stand, we realize what great responsibilities, and opportunities, we have to do yet even more for our friends and neighbors in America and throughout the world. During this month, as we give special thanks to God, may we grow in our desire to serve others. May we be forever grateful for our American Catholic roots and for the many future opportunities we will have to further re-energize the Church. In this month ahead, by God’s mercy and good grace, may we be clearly seen as the face of Christ to all those we encounter.
