St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin October 31st & November 1st, 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully
All Saints
No one really likes to think about the last of anything, particularly the last days of our lives.
Yet there is a side to our nature that is drawn to thoughts of the end of life at this time of the year.
We’re beginning the last month of the church year and the second-to-last month of the calendar year. Night falls earlier and earlier each day. Leaves fall from the trees, leaving branches that look dead. Skies are gray. It is November.
The Church uses these waning days and darker skies as the season to remind us of the last things. Today’s feast, the Solemnity of All Saints, is the centerpiece of three days that point to doctrines we proclaim each time we say the
Nicene Creed: “We believe in the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting!” And while the days and our hearts may be dark, the readings today are bright with the light of faith. John’s vision in the book of Revelation reveals dazzling angels and white-robed saints gathered in triumph around the throne of God. In the responsorial psalm we sing our longing to see God’s face, and in the second reading John writes that we are God’s children and will, in fact, see God “as he is” (1 John 3:2). This is our hope. This is God’s promise.
Then, in the Gospel, we read Jesus’ formula for saint-making. “You will be blessed,” we are told: blessed if we are poor in spirit, sorrowing, lowly, hungry for holiness, merciful, single-hearted, peacemakers, and persecuted.
Matthew’s words in this Gospel point us directly back to the first reading. “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (Revelation 7:14). Today we celebrate the triumph of those who already gaze on the face of God. Tomorrow we cry out for mercy with those in purgatory, who, like us on earth, still long to see God’s face.
Today’s Readings: Revelation 7:2–4, 9–14; Psalm 24:1–6; 1 John 3:1–3; Matthew 5:1–12a

Dear Parishioners,
This weekend the Church celebrates with joy the feast of All Saints. We are given a glimpse of what our future holds for us. You and I are destined for heavenly glory living in the fullness of the light that is God.
While we can hardly imagine what heaven is like, we are given the example of those who have gone before us as encouragement for our living faithfully. We may not feel that we are Saintly material, but neither did those whose memory we celebrate. In our minds we can see our faults and knowing how un-
Christ like we are most of the time, hope is offered us in these holy men and women who struggled with life just as we do. Let us keep our heads held high as we await the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God.
This month of November is given over to remembering as we think of those souls of our beloved dead. Death for those who believe is a door through which each of us must pass. What lies beyond is not fully known, but our loving creator will not let us slip through His fingers! Prayer is part of this journey and so let us pray for those who have died that their joy will be fulfilled and ours promised.
Don't forget the time changes this weekend and next weekend the Saturday evening Mass time will move to 4:30 with confessions at beginning at 4:00pm. And don't forget our upcoming Mission. God is good and Faithful and how blest we are......!
God bless you as you keep up your good work,
Fr. Tully.
For the weekend of October 31 and November 1, 2015
All Saints Day
Listening to Jesus preach the Beatitudes is strong indeed for All Saints Day. The present state of affairs for believers may include poverty, broken spirit, persecution and mourning. Blessed are they, Jesus says, but clearly not because of their circumstances.
Their blessing lies in being a part of the kingdom of
God that exists both in the present and in the future. The verbs “are” and “will” indicate that God is at work in the present world, bringing the kingdom to completion. Those within the present kingdom of God who “are” in difficult circumsta nces “will be” blessed when God brings about the new creation.
Their hope, however, is not merely a future one. It occurs in the present because such people are found living according to the values of God’s kingdom. These are good stewards of their faith who are humble and poor in spirit, merciful, peacemakers, pure in heart, and who endure mockery or harm for Jesus’ sake. The kingdom of heaven is for all good stewards not only in the future, but in the here and now.
