St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin December 12th & 13th, 2015 Pastor: Fr. HarryTully Third Sunday of Advent “THE LORD IS IN YOUR MIDST” Both today’s reading from Zephaniah and the responsorial psalm exult that “the LORD is in your midst.” They proclaim the presence of God among the people of Israel and foretell the core of our faith in the Incarnation. God is not far off. God’s love was manifested in Jesus’ coming as a human person and is present here and now in us. John the Baptist also proclaims the coming of Christ into our midst and reminds us that our lives must change if we are to be ready to welcome the Messiah at his coming. These scriptures are not unlike the bells that seem to surround us at this time of year. They call us to rejoice. They call us to worship. And they call us to change. One bell in particular, the Salvation Army bell, reminds us that not everyone has experienced God’s saving presence yet. There are many who suffer while others wallow in abundance. “What should we do?” John the Baptist calls us to respond to their need. He calls us to change our ways so that Christ’s saving presence can truly be manifested “in our midst.” “WHAT SHOULD WE DO?” One way to discover what we should do this Advent is to pray the Our Father with extra sincerity and attentiveness. We pray, “Thy kingdom come; thy will be done.” We commit ourselves to a spirit of trust and forgiveness and ask to be kept from temptation. As we get ready for the coming of Christmas it is good to ask ourselves what God’s will is for us, whom we are called to forgive, and how we are tempted. What should we do so that God’s kingdom might come into our lives more fully this Christmas? How would John the Baptist reply to us if we asked him, “What should we do?” Today’s Readings: Zephaniah 3:14–18a; Isaiah 12:2–6; Philippians 4:4–7; Luke 3:10–18 Fr. Each year, the busyness of this season serves to distract us from having an Advent season that truly prepares us for the celebration of Christmas, with all its meaning. Our week begins with “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. It comes from the first word of the Entrance antiphon on Sunday. The spirit of joy that begins this week comes from the words of Paul, “The Lord is near.” This joyful spirit is marked by the third candle of our Advent wreath, which is rose colored, and the rose colored vestments often used at the Eucharist. Each day this week, we will continue to go through our everyday life, but we will experience the difference our faith can bring to it. We are confident that the grace we ask for will be given us. We will encounter sin - in our own hearts and in our experience of the sin of the world. We can pause in those moments, and feel the joy of the words, “You are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 If you missed the Penance Service here there will be one at St. John Paul II in Sellersburg on Dec 16, 6:30pm. “Connected in the Spirit” The Core Team will be overseeing the evaluation of parish ministries based on the Criteria for Planning. They will be evaluating our parish strengths and weaknesses based on the survey you should have received last week at Mass or by mail earlier this week. Please fill the survey out and return it by next Sunday. Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests spent years working in Catholic schools, hospitals and agencies, often for little pay. Their sacrifices leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious collection helps provide prescriptions medications, nursing care and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.
