St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin October 10th & 11th , 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE RICH YOUNG MAN AND ME One way to enter into a particular passage from the Bible is to put ourselves in the place of one of the characters. Try doing that today with the character of the rich young man in today’s Gospel. We have all asked the kind of ultimate question posed by the young man: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17). So often we focus on other kinds of questions that have to do with our lives here on earth, questions like “What percentage of my salary should I dedicate to my 401(k) plan in order to retire comfortably?” While considerations such as these are important to ensure a comfortable future, today’s Gospel challenges us to ask the question that matters so much more. FORETASTE OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN Jesus’ response to the rich young man reveals an understanding of what God’s kingdom is all about. What we do here on earth is simply a rehearsal for the life to come. In God’s kingdom, there is no suffering, no poverty, no injustice. What we do with the gift of our earthly lives must focus on doing our part to establish that kind of kingdom here on earth. We do not have to look far to realize that this world is in need of change. Like the rich young man, we all strive to keep the commandments. Like him, we, too, are asked to do much more, most of the time in small ways, in our families, neighborhoods, schools, and workplace. The first step is to live a life of awareness—we need to attune ourselves to opportunities for doing our part to alleviate suffering and injustice. We live in hope that when we arrive at heaven’s door, what awaits us there will not be something completely surprising. What we hope to find is a kingdom of which we had a foretaste while we were here on earth. Today’s Readings: Wisdom 7:7–11; Psalm 90:12–17; Hebrews 4:12–13; Mark 10:17–30 [17–27] Fr. Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of October 10-11, 2015 St. M 12.30 pm En Español Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners, “Then who can be saved?” “.... All things are possible for God.” Salvation is God's gift to us, you and I are challenged to accept that gift and our lives are to reflect that fact. The success of our lives is the witness we offer to others expressing that we have accepted what God has done for us. Many time though people point to others as a reason to leave the church or to criticize all believers because of those who live contrary to their belief. In the examination of our conscience do we ever consider if our words or actions encourage or discourage others in their search for faith. I would imagine that sometimes the things that are seen as meaning nothing to us mean something different to others. Let's make sure that our lives draw others closer to God and His merciful love and then that will be proof of our acceptance of the great gift of salvation given to us through the suffering and death of our Lord and Savior, Jesus! We are looking forward to our Parish “Mission” in November. Next weekend we will begin praying for this special time and the openness of all will be with us during the time. Also please ask God's blessing upon the youth attending the Encounter on October 24th at St. Michael. This past week St. Michael Parishioner, Joyce Bower passed away and will be buried from St. Michael on Monday at 10:00am. During this time please keep her family in your prayers as they mourn her passing. God bless all, keep up the good work and remember to invite friends and family back to Church. Fr. Tully Jesus offers a hard lesson regarding wealth and possessions in today’s Gospel. The rich man whom he encountered could not part with his possessions as a condition to becoming a disciple of Jesus. Would our response be the same as the rich man? Do we place our trust in our money and possessions instead of trusting in God’s generosity? Do we seek security in our possessions? Good stewards realize that their possessions must not possess them, lest those possessions block their relationship with the Lord. International ST. Step 1: Listen to the Word: In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks the rich young man to give away all that he has in order to have treasure in heaven. But he is unable to free himself from his possessions, and so he goes sadly away. Does what I own keep me from following Jesus? Step two: Look into your Life. Children: How difficult would it be for you to give something you treasure to someone else who needed it more than you do? Youth & Adults: How hard is it for you to part with things you treasure? Do your possessions ever stand in the way of having deeper communication with God? Join us for the Aquinas Center Bus Trip to Ferdinand for the 18th Annual Christkindlmarkt!
