DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT SERVICES For Reference Only CLASS CODE: 7406 PAY GRADE: 008 CLASS TITLE: ANIMAL TECHNICIAN ALLOCATION FACTOR(S) This is work in the care and management of research animals and facilities, including assisting veterinarians and/or research staff in routine surgical and/or autopsy procedures. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: (Note: The examples of work as listed in this class specification are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. Examples of work performed are not to be used for allocation purposes.) Assists in administering medical treatments such as vaccines, parasiticidal drugs and collecting blood samples. Quarantines laboratory animals for research experiments and records detailed research data. Prepares and administers specialized animal feeds in accordance with instructions. Assists in the performance of various procedures on contaminated or diseased animals and coordinates the disposal and decontamination of animals. Maintains and repairs animal facilities and laboratory equipment. Maintains schedules and records of breeding colonies following clearly defined procedures; produces in-bred, cross-bred, and line-bred strains. Assists in the preparation of animals for laboratory investigation. Assists veterinary staff in routine animal surgical procedures. Performs related work as required. Knowledge of the equipment and materials used in animal care. Knowledge of basic arithmetic. 7406-ANIMAL TECHNICIAN-CS Skill in the use of animal care equipment and materials. Ability to administer feed, medicines, tests, injections and other basic animal care practices. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions relating to animal care. Ability to work with animals. Ability to make careful visual observations. Ability to collect and record technical data relating to animal care. Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS One year of experience in animal care. College education from an accredited institution or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for the required experience provided such education includes one course in animal care, veterinary nursing or animal science.
