Master Thesis Project at CEVT
Title:
Topology optimization of internal fluid flows
Subject: Fluid dynamics optimization with CFD
CEVT
China-Euro Vehicle Technology CEVT is a joint engineering and development center for future B- and Csegment cars, addressing the needs of both Volvo Cars and Geely Auto.
Background
The Energy CAE team is part of CEVT and is responsible to analyze and develop the thermal and fluid properties of
the complete vehicle.
To analyze these properties conventional CFD-tools are used such as ANSA and Fluent.
As the vehicle becomes more packed with new technology less space is available for routing channels for cooling, air
induction and climate ducts. An automated method for finding the optimized routing of these internal fluid flows is
needed to shorten development time and minimize the used space without comprising performance.
Today the conventional optimization techniques are based on parametric CAD or different morphing methods which
is heavy in computing and modelling time. A topology optimization approach utilizes the available design space to find
the best geometric design in terms of low pressure drop.
Scope
The objective of this thesis project is to develop a method that can be used to investigate and optimize routing
of internal fluid flows in the vehicle. This method is also intended to be automated trough out the entire CFD
process from pre-processing to post processing.

CEVT is a joint engineering and development center for future C-segment cars,
addressing the needs of both Volvo Cars and Geely Auto. CEVT covers vital aspects
of passenger car development – from the joint architecture, to power train and drive
line components, to top hat engineering as well as the vehicles’ exterior design.
The modular strategy will deliver on the premium aspects that Volvo Cars requires,
as well as on Geely Auto’s demands, in order to compete in the automotive market.
