www.cevt.se Master Thesis Project at CEVT Title: Statistical Road Load Data Assessment Subject: Road Load Data for Fatigue Analysis in Concept Phase CEVT China-Euro Vehicle Technology CEVT is a joint engineering and development center for future B- and Csegment cars, addressing the needs of both Volvo Cars and Geely Auto. Background The Chassis & Powertrain CAE group is a part of CEVT and responsible for generation of virtual Road Load Data for fatigue and strength analysis of chassis and powertrain systems and components. Several driving events are simulated using multibody dynamics tools to calculate the resulting stresses and fatigue life of chassis and powertrain components such as link arms, knuckles, dampers, springs, engine mounts. Since the CPU time required to run through all events is significant, it is highly desirable to find alternative methods for early concept phase studies where quick turnaround is more important than absolute precision. One such method may be based on statistical analysis of existing vehicle RLD data to establish correlation between key vehicle chassis parameters and the resulting fatigue loads. If statistical methods can be used with acceptable predictive capability, target cascading in early vehicle program phases can be enhanced. Scope The objective of this thesis project is to a. Investigate if statistical methods are valid based on available data b. If considered valid, select and apply method(s) to create RLD assessment tool in e.g. Excel Thesis overview Literature study Goals/milestone definition Development Documentation: document the results in a thesis report and make a final presentation. Prerequisites Significant interest and understanding of mathematical statistics methods Basic understanding of vehicle function and concepts such as weight distribution, suspension travel, bump stops, dampers, tires. The duration of the thesis work is 20 weeks and the work will be carried out at Chalmers University, Göteborg in collaboration with CEVT. Suitable Student Background Master’s student in Engineering Mathematics and Computational Science. Please apply with CV and cover letter. Starting date January 2016 Number of students 2 CEVT is a joint engineering and development centre for future C-segment cars, addressing the needs of both Volvo Cars and Geely Auto. CEVT covers vital aspects of passenger car development – from the joint architecture, to power train and drive line components, to top hat engineering as well as the vehicles’ exterior design. The modular strategy will deliver on the premium aspects that Volvo Cars requires, as well as on Geely Auto’s demands, in order to compete in the automotive market.
