Responsibilities of the Science Technicians’ Assistant The role holder will contribute skill and knowledge to the Science Department Team promoting excellence and equality of opportunity for both pupils and staff. The Science Technicians’ Assistant is responsible for providing technical and administrative support to the Science Department and will show the flexibility and ability to work with the Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology departments when required. In particular the Science Technicians’ Assistant will: Daily Procedure Maintain the security, tidiness and general good-working-order of the Prep Room/Workshop. Maintain the security, tidiness and general good-working-order of the Laboratories. Report faults (in either the workshop or the labs) to the Senior Science Technician or the Head of Department, and the maintenance team/third parties (as appropriate). Maintain and administer a system for the loaning out and the return of books. The general upkeep, cleaning, building and repair (where possible) of apparatus used on a regular basis. Deficiencies in quantity or quality of apparatus should be reported to the Senior Science Technician or Head of Department. Report faults in apparatus/equipment to the Senior Science Technician or Head of Department, and the maintenance team/third parties (as appropriate) The preparation of materials, apparatus and equipment required by members of staff before and after lessons in order to teach the agreed schemes of work. The duplication of work sheets, safety sheets, handouts, exam questions, diagrams and other materials required by members of the Science Department. Any additional duties, as directed by the Director of Science, which are within the reasonable capability and responsibility of the Science Technician Safety Be aware of the School’s Health & Safety Policy particularly relating to the Science Department. Ensure all work is carried out and equipment maintained in accordance with good practice and within Health & safety requirements. Advise other technical staff on matters of electrical safety of equipment. In conjunction with all staff of the School, support, promote and act within the School’s Safeguarding Policy. Any additional duties, as directed by the Science Technicians or Teachers, which are within the reasonable capability and responsibility of the Science Technicians’ Assistant. Line Management The Science Technicians’ Assistant is managed on a day to day basis by the Chemistry Technician and the Director of Science and is ultimately responsible to the Bursar. The Candidate Applications are invited from enthusiastic, preferably well-qualified individuals with a proven track record of excellence in a technical role preferably within an education setting. The role will require technical, administrative and communication skills of the highest order combined with an empathetic approach to working in an academic environment. A good working knowledge of Science is desirable but training will be given where necessary. It will also help to be a fast learner and to enjoy learning new skills for their own sake. Practical experience of working in a team-based department would be advantageous and knowledge of working in an academic environment would also help. Computer skills are important, in particular a good working knowledge of Word and Excel. The candidate will have the ability to work flexibly, efficiently and to deadlines. Inevitably certain times of the academic year are pressured in the pattern of workload and it is important that the post holder maintains a positive attitude. The post holder will be discreet, but friendly and approachable, actively encouraging and supporting staff and colleagues behind the scenes. Interviews Interviews will be conducted at the School. This will consist of an interview with relevant colleagues including the Headmaster and the Bursar. Terms and Conditions The job is available on a term time only basis. Normal working hours are 8am to 5:00pm. The successful applicant will be expected to work on Founder’s Day, one Saturday per year in late June or early July. This is a temporary appointment which will automatically terminate on 16th December in the first instance. The salary will be £8.00 per hour, and will be paid in monthly instalments. On completion of the required recruitment checks, the post would be available to the successful candidate with immediate effect or at the completion of their due term of notice.
