Education and/or Training Required o Important skills include being able to work in a laboratory, recording results and outcomes, and distributing results back for the correct patients. Skills also include extreme attention to detail and extreme carefulness (not cross-contaminating samples).
o High school courses should include biology, technology courses, and mathematics. o Medical technicians should hold an associate’s degree from a community college or vocational school. Certification through The National Credentialing Agency for
Laboratory Personne and The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and American Medical Technologists are required in most states. Licenses are not required, but can be obtained for a raise in salary and an advantage in getting a job. o Postgraduate work can include getting an associate’s degree or becoming licensed. Though it is not required, it would be a beneficial idea. Postgraduate work can also include working on a bachelor’s degree, and taking part in a training program.
Responsibilities and Daily Activities o Common responsibilities and activities include taking blood for blood tests, analyzing results, pursuing proper tests, keeping medical equipment sterile, and staining specimens. Assisting doctors and obversiving vital signs are also included in a medical technician’s job. o There are many different types of specialization. Phlebotomists, surgical technicians, and histotechnicians are just some careers of specialization. o Medical technicians work in medical laboratories, where they work for hospitals or doctors with private practices.
