Course: Proficient/Advanced Theatre Arts Instructor: Terry Gabbard, Brian Seagroves Email: terryw.gabbard@cms.k12.nc.us , briane.seagroves@cms.k12.nc.us Course Length: 36 weeks Purpose: Students create characters for theatrical productions through scene, character, and technical analysis. Through improvisation, script writing, and collaboration, actors refine their working knowledge and independent thought, articulating and justifying their creative choices. Through completion of course objects student work will become more developed and significant mastery of artistic choices becomes evident. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students will be required to participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom. Goal: Through the knowledge and application of theatre concepts students will become confident, creative, and collaborative communicators for the 21st century. Texts: On Acting by Sanford Meisner, Respect for Acting by Uta Hagen, Alice in Wonderland (play script) Required Materials: 3 Ring Binder 1.5 inch, Five Dividers Pencil/ Pen Colored Pencils Highlighter 3 Subject Spiral Bound Notebook Journaling: The composition of a daily reflection journal is a major component of the course. Students are responsible for completing daily journal prompts at the beginning and end of each lesson. The journal must be available for journal checks at anytime. Performance Experience: Students are required to participate in a formal performance to receive credit for this course. A written reflection of this performance will serve as a formal grade for the second semester. Theatre Critique Paper: Students are required to attend three theatrical performances and compose a formal theatre critique paper. This paper will be used as formal assessment for each semester. This paper will be due five days after the production. Rehearsal Journal: Students will be required to complete an in depth rehearsal journal for their experience in the advance theatre production. This penalty is accumulated per calendar day. Grade Break Down Formal Assignments – 70% Journal Checks, Performances, Tests, Projects Informal Assignments – 30% Workshops, Participation, Daily Work
