15. Aims
This course is designed for 1st year Business Management students and aims to:
 Develop students' study skills, including awareness of how to manage their own studies
 Develop students' understanding of the underlying concepts of business and management research
 Enable to students to have a basic understanding of qualitative and quantitative 'evidence'
 Develop students' appreciation of the application of business and management research and its role in professional contexts
 Develop students' appreciation of the role of evidence in presenting and evaluating arguments in academic and non-academic contexts
16. Syllabus
The course will cover a range of issues relevant to business management students' core study skills. An indicative syllabus:
 Underlying research concepts (for example, understanding the role of theory)
 What constitutes 'evidence'?
 Identifying sources of evidence
 Different ways of presenting business management research, for example, journal papers, government reports, company reports.
 Using evidence (both qualitative and quantitative) to present a convincing argument
 Using evidence to evaluate arguments
 Presenting arguments in various formats, for example, presentations, reports, posters
