September 3
Topic: Ancient India and Ancient China
Chapter Focus: In what ways did the civilizations and empires of ancient India and China lay
long-lasting social and political foundations?
I will use a PowerPoint Presentation, video clips, interactive maps and other worksheets to
enhance the understanding of the subject content.
Section One Focus: How have scholars learned about India’s first two civilizations, the Indus
and Aryan?
Key Terms: Introduce terms students should define on p. 68. Students will be able to define
the terms as we go through the text and powerpoint slides.
Instruction:
Topic: Geography of the Indian subcontinent

a. What natural features did people benefit from by living in the Indus River Valley?
b. How have monsoons affected India?

3. Quick Activity: Read biography of Mortimer Wheeler and be able to discuss Wheeler’s
contributions to archaeology
a. Which two Indus cities did archaeologists discover in the 1920’s?
b. What were some similarities between the two cities?
c. Why do you think the cities might have been so alike?
4. Enrichment: video clips
5. Homework: Read the subheading “Indus Civilization Rises and Fall” pp. 70-71.
September 4
Homework Reading Check: What evidence shows that Indus civilization included a wellorganized government? Details presented by students will be written on board.
Instruction:
Using a PowerPoint Presentation, I will introduce students to Aryan Civilization.
Ask:
1. How do we know about Aryan Civilization?
2. How did the Aryan Civilization differ from the Indus Valley Civilization?
3. How were Aryan society and government structured?
Topic: Epic Literature Tells About Aryan Life
Build Background: Name some literary epics that reflect the values, beliefs, and history of a
civilization. Write on board.
1. Students read the first two sentences under this heading on p. 74.
Ask: How did the Aryan world in 500BC differ from early Aryan Civilization?
2. Students will read “The Mahabharata” special feature on p. 75 and answer the critical
thinking question.
